Chateau Malescot St. Exupery is a 3rd growth wine from the Margaux region. The winery added the lands encompassing Chateau Dubignon (another 3rd growth wine) under the ownership of Mr. Fourcade. He also added the words "Semper Ad Altum" on the bottle which is Latin for "Always Striving Higher".
Named after late 1600s owner Simon Malescot (AG to Louis XIV) and Comte St. Exupery (owner around 1825)
Vineyard is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Grapes are hand picked. Aged in 80% new oak. About 100,000 bottles a year.
For the 2005 vintage, blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
Winery has suffered historically from unstable ownership But now family owned by the Zuger family since 1955, it has a personalized feel and the stability it needs to re-establish itself as a great winery. Jean Luc Zuger has been managing the operations of the winery since 1994 and the wine is on the uptick. Best vintages to get are 2005 & 2009 but recent vintages a very, very good and winery is consistently making stellar wines.
