...I worked at a shop that sold PPI and Orion and Eclipse and Zapco.and Arc. Every once in a while some one would bring these in for install. These Profile amps were cheaper...and sounded cheaper, but not bad....the American made MTX were great sounding, bulletproof amps....Back in the day, After work, I would drive my Honda Prelulde, that was packed with a Soundstream 1002 and a 604 Rubi, and a 15" Soundtream SPL, and MB Quart front stage to the CircuitCity Roadshop and hang out with and bullshit with the roadshop installers...and even with the Best Buy Rockford guys...those were the days my friend, so much fun

I had friends with California Profile stuff before and they seemed to work and sound fine. I think most people knew that they were less powerful than they claimed. I had a California Profile 15 subwoofer but I managed to kill it by fumbling a screwdriver right into the cone. I slipped and stabbed it dead on middle of the cone. I patched it with some E6000 and some paper from a donor subwoofer. I gave it away and the guy ran it for a few years and it seemed to hold up.

I used to install back in the day but never had a big setup for myself. Did a profile setup for a friend and liked the performance/price so my setup had a 4x75w profile amp and a AP300M mono drivng Crossfiire components and a pair of 8 inch Ctossfire subs was happy with it after figuring it out the 4 channel didnt like the 2ohms bridged load and having it repaired twice. Just gave it 4 ohms per channel and they were reliable. Entire setup survived pounding for about 10 years and I gave em away when i sold the car about 7 years ago.

I was 16 when I bought my first system. I had 2x 12” pioneer tsw-30f subs( blue and pink) and a profile California a600. It was the black and pink one from 1996. It was amazing how loud it was. I had a HUGE box that was about 52”x 20”tall and 16” deep. Good memories. I couldn’t afford Soundstream class A 10.0, broke high school kid making $4.15 an hour. 😂 Now I’ve got a system in every vehicle, tons of Soundstream amps. Class A 10.0, 5.0 and rubicon 10.2, 2x rubicon 1002, reference 700sx and lots of Phoenix gold, alpine 4x mrv-1507, and my favorite Alpine 3558 that was completely dead when I bought it. Now it sounds amazing. All the Elna caps leaked and corroded the traces to the power supply IC cards.

I have always wanted one of the high power smooth blue finish ones back in the day. They ran with the big 3 and were always the better buy as long as they were installed properly. If you had ground loops, clipping, or improper installation you would perceive these as being cheap. If you had a good installer they were awesome. Im not sure I would say circuit city or best buy really had installers that were putting in the effort for a quality build. LOL

I had a 250w Profile amp circa 1989/1990. It predated the California line. I replaced a 120w Pioneerr with it and it was much stronger AND sounded better. I ran my whole system off of it with passive crossovers and it really did sound good. I added a Hifonics Hercules on my subs and moved it to the mids and highs and it kept up nicely. It was probably overrated, but it really was clean. My brother had a Sansui (ppi made) and it was quite comparable.

I think Rockford made a lot of new design subs that year with the inverted dome (concave...) dustcaps. I bought a pair of new 12 inch subs made for sealed boxes (not Series 1 and not Power). Both dustcaps had a 60 degree section with little to no adhesive. Peeled up. Some QC there. They likely produced more subs than ever at that time - especually near 2000. Got my money back at the same moment. They may have been one with a light spot on the surround too. New employees, new processes.
