I'm sure you have done your research, but I want to mention a few things you should know. I have owned a 2003 6 speed SMT for 7 years and I love it and some of the issues that need to be addressed A.S.A.P. are, change the SMT fluid right away, gut the pre catalectic converter, replace the accelerator position sensors on the throttle body because if one fails it will leave you stranded on the side of the road and clean the carbon out of the power steering motor housing. Get Toyota Tech Stream from Ebay and a laptop (there are videos on that subject on KZitem so you can do the parts change relearn yourself you will thank me later. Make sure the soft top drains are clear because if it gets rained on the water will fill up the compartment where the ECU and TCU are located and will destroy them. I got my car with 52,000 miles (83,000km) and now has 86,000 miles (138,000km) Enjoy your MR2.

Thanks very much Mr. Fixit for the tips and suggestions! - SMT fluid replacement -> done! - Pre-cat/headers has been replaced with after market headers - Power steering/Coolant/transmission replacement -> done! - soft top drain clean-out -> done! I will take a look at the accelerator position sensors on the throttle body this summer (not sure what sensors you’re talking about here). Yes, I do own a Toyota Tech-stream to use on all my Toyota’s.

MrFixit1, I have found a 2004 MR2 for sale with the SMG transmission. The transmission is broken and the car will not drive. What are some good sources of information on how to repair the car's transmission? I want to do my research before I make an offer on the car.

They’re good so far. Not sure on the track but no issue on normal pavement nor in the rain.

How is your transmission working? Any trouble with it functioning correctly?

It’s so far so good for this SMT. I did the fluid change for both transmission and SMT actuator when I first got it home. It’s been driven two summers here in Canada with no trouble.

85K is not bad for a 2002. if it’s still in good condition and no issues with SMT, it’s totally worth it.

@@farhanzaman152 Try to upshift and downshift on every gear. Look for any SMT fluid leak under the engine/transmission. Also I forgot to mention, 2002 model may have issues with engine due to the Pre-cat problem. You can do some research on MR2 MK3 pre-cast problem so you know what I mean.
