How to replace the transmission fluid and filter on a 2006-2013 Rav4.
An automatic transmission relies heavily on fluid for wet-clutch operation and slide-valve movement. Over time, automatic transmission fluid breaks down from heat and shearing action causing clutches to slip and passage-ways to become restricted. This equates to expensive repairs as a result of poor maintenance.
Industry standard for replacing transmission fluid is about every 30,000-60,000 miles. Stress from excessive shifting or towing requires the fluid to be replaced more frequently.
A good way to check the fluid's condition, is to pull the dipstick and check its color and smell. Fluid that is broken down is typically dark and brown (rather than pink or red) and has a potent burnt smell. Fluid in this state ought to be changed immediately to restore its protective properties and prolong component life.
