Hi mate I have a Amberjack 270 same year. The old mercruiser is starting to give me a lot of trouble. Who built the bracket? Would you have the plans available?

Did you ever get a response. I have a 2006 270 AJ as well and am interested in this. Could be a great alternative and cost savings in the long run. Its a great boat otherwise.

The whole project including engine probably cost around 50K.

Would it be possible to put twin 200s or a Yamaha 425 on this thing? The 8.2 liter Mercruisers put out 430 horsepower.

Did this setup get tuned in? Did the motor go up a notch or two? What was the final propeller selection? Can you post the final performance results compared to the previous power? Neat modification and nice video production.

Yes it is all tuned in now. All aspects of performance are better than the 5.7L mercruiser the boat came with according to the owner. Not sure of the specifics I never ran it with the I/O.

this is sweet! have a 1984 210 fisherman thinking of doing the same with an entire refit. what hp outboard and shaft length do you think? has a Alpha 1 with merc 305.

You want to set the bracket for a 25 or 30 '' motor. A old 305 is probably equivalent to a 200hp outboard and maybe less.

This looks good! Do you have more videos? I would be interested in such conversion. 25Feet is ideal for family trips too, however not too keen on sterndrives

I have another i will upload of a big old commercial fishing boat we converted. Once a i/o gets close to 10 years old in the saltwater they all turn into disasters.

I bet that boat run better with 2 x 100hp outboards

A 20 pitch might be good, you also have a lot of prop slip. Dirty hull? Maybe try a high-rake 20p 4-bladed prop and trim the engine out a bit.

Hull was clean. 17x16 Suzuki 3 blade was the ticket at 6300 rpm trimed out and light.

Looks like a very expensive swap for loss of power. The maintenance will be better but man that’s a lot of work and cash.

If you didnt rebuild the transom it is going to fail eventually. An I/O transom is not designed for the torque of an outboard. This is a tragic mistake many people make.

Some boats have a sturdy enough transom many dont, that is why you strengthen , brace, and if needed completely rebuild the transom thicker.

The I/O mount is carrying the torque against the prop, particularly because of the offset between motor drive shaft and prop shaft. It’s not an inboard. If the I/O mount bolts were removed, all hell would cut loose back there. The new bracket spreads out the forces over a very large area of the transom, where as an outboard mounts with relatively tiny contact surface with just 4 or 6 bolts, same for I/O mount. The new bracket has about a dozen or more bolts.
