Excellent automotive tutorial video for not being a mechanic like you mentioned. It's to the point, thorough, thoughtful, and pretty professional.

Thank you very much for posting this. You are a wise man to use factory parts & replace everything "just in case". It looks like Toyota didn't make the timing belt in these impossible to work on like some Volvo's I know! Again thank you for taking the time to make this video.

No power tools, and pretty much one day, took my time. The second day I just connected radiator hoses, added fluid, and changed out spark plugs. It's really not that bad, but do this at your own risk. If you were install the belt one notch over to much in regards to cam gear alignment, I'm sure you could really screw some stuff up. I have a lot more pride and confidence in my car now.

Such an EXCELLENT video! Clear, concise, succinct. Your use of genuine Toyota parts is also appreciated! Means you're invested in the work you're doing, and your property. Conveys pride in your work. I've been a huge fan of the 3rdGen GS V8's since '06. I'm definitely going to be trading in mine and my family's fleet of Saabs for a Lexus fleet. This video puts my mind to rest about ease of regular maintenance. Thank you!

+Nathandm78 Really appreciate your comment. I figured i'm driving a $50K vehicle, although older now, I need to keep the value there and stick to OEM. Ditto on the v8, its no rocket by any means, but daily driving is very comfortable and the motor has a nice rumble to it. When it comes to merging or passing cars, she doesn't hesitate. The fact that I'm comfortable working on my own car is one reason I've owned the car for 9 years. Not comfortable working on anything newer, i'm just a normal DIY guy.

tunedis95 Just watched your video, I don't think your a normal diy guy. Working at medium speed with attention to detail is usually seen in older mechanics. Good job! I've owned Toyotas and lexus for 30 years now, great vehicles, great value. Using toyota parts is commendable. Just for happy knowledge, the water pump timing belt etc for older 4.7 285 cid in sequoias, tundras etc are exactly the same. Toyota quality for less than lexus wants. Again good work on your Lexus!

Nice video bro. That wasn't to bad tho. I learned some of this on my 99 gs400 when I replaced the tensioner and coolant pulley bracket myself. So I was half way there,I'll probably eventually do my timing belt too. This video really helped just to get a better idea thanks!

Thanks for a great tutorial. I have 40k on my timing belt, and I have crankshaft seal leak, so I'm scratching my head if I go there to get TB since I'm doing it all, or just go there fix the seal and call it a day for the next 50k miles.

After watching this video and another video on a 2004 GS430, I got a lot more confidence I can do this by myself now. I may even make a video as well since I have a nice newer phone these days. Can't thank you enough for being thorough with your explanations on things. I had no idea what the pin on that tensioner was for, glad I left it alone and didn't remove it now LOL!! Very important detail that the other video I watched skipped right over. One question I do have, is it difficult to reinstall the harmonic balancer? Also, do you need a pulley/wheel installer tool kit in order to put it back on? Thanks in advance if you see this before I begin working on the car this weekend

They're the same. If you go to Lexus to buy parts, they'll come in a Toyota box. At that point, you're reminded you paid $50K for a Camry that has some upgrades. ha ha ha

If I'm not wrong, get the marks lined up before removing the old timing belt. It'll be at the safe zone which isn't necessarily TDC. If it's like other cars, the piston won't be fully topped out so not really any risk of a valve hitting if the cams suddenly turned. Good luck! I'm planning on doing my LS430 in the next month, just got to order parts.
@spyderm4n
2 жыл бұрын
Oh to add I saw another video explaining the 0 degree mark at the crank and the next mark that looks like a metal knob sticking out to the right of it when looking at the engine as the safe mark. I'm not calling it its technical term but that's where the crank should be and the cam marks should line up too.

Don’t know if this is a stupid question or not but why are you using threadlock? Wouldn’t it be wise to put them on dry for the next time you have to do the service? As long as you torque them you should be good
@tunedis95
3 жыл бұрын
You're correct, dry would have been just fine. I actually should have used the blue threadlock, which is intended for this type of metal. I guess at the time, I figured it was the last time I would do this myself, so I applied what I had.
@unodfredy

Once you align the belt with both L and R cam mark, the crank segment will like up with the mark on the bottom. All the belt marks will line up with the marks on the engine, cams, and pulley on the crank.

Between youtube, and reading forums, I learned enough to feel comfortable to doing myself. You're sort of taking everything off, and putting it back in, while trying not to mess anything up in the process. I'm also a person that converted my old 240sx to right hand drive, swapped from SOHC do DOHC motor/trans in the 240, changes his own brakes/oil in my own vehicles plus my parents, Installed a standby 22kw generator w/transfer switch at my home (includes 120' of conduit for 3-0 copper wire), made a mechanical canopy lift for my 240 gallon aquarium, laid 1500 sq ft of ceramic tile down on my own, and make my own moonshine (used to power my lawnmower). I just don't trust people enough to pay someone to work on my stuff. lol So use your own discretion when attempting a repair something yourself.

If you look at part 1 of the video, once i removed the vvti cover, you'll see rubber ring on the motor side. This seal does not hold any pressure, seal appeared to be in good shape, so i just re-used it. I only used sealant on sealing areas that are pressure sealing.
