I purchased this 2006 Baja in Missouri knowing it needed head gaskets. After tearing the engine down, Dad and I discovered covers and bits of plastic that were melted from intense heat. The cylinder heads were smooth and straight without visible cracks. We couldn’t find evidence of failure on the head gaskets either. The only possible culprit could be the surface of the block, which I have never checked before because the heads are always the parts that warp. In this case, the block on the driver side was .004” low in the center! We used a known good short block from a 2005 Impreza that I had waiting in the wings and the car runs great. I will forever more check the straightness of the block when there is a coolant burning/ coolant in oil situation.
The reason the heads were straight, I’m concluding, is because the original head gaskets failed and caused a massive overheating event, leading to warped heads and the need for new head gaskets. The heads were surfaced and the gaskets were replaced, but the overheating/ coolant drinking problem was not solved, so they ditched the car because they had probably already spent considerable money on the repair.
