@@campbellshore9627 I'd missed that it started on the referee's whistle. Looking back at an older NCAA rulebook, it looks like after a penalty, the game clock is restarted on the referee's signal (Rule 3.3.2.e.4), not the snap. The only delay-of-game exception I saw was for a scrimmage kick formation (Rule 3.3.2.d.11).

This was the first game broadcast by the new Big10 Network. I had DirectTV at the time and didn't even realize I could watch the game until the 2nd quarter. At that time I was a prof at App State. When the game ended and the broadcast went back to the studio, the hosts were in shock. My father in-law was a Michigan alum. I saw that the Big10 Network was going to re-air the game the next day so I called him and told him to watch it again and maybe Michigan would win it the 2nd try. Online sales of App State t-shirts, caps, etc depleted the App bookstore within 1 day, they all were sent to buyers in Columbus.

Coach Moore said after the game it was to guard against a bad snap. Have a bad snap, you can fall on the ball and still have enough time to get another try off. Whether it made sense depends on how you ranked the odds of a bad snap versus the odds of a Michigan score in twenty-odd seconds.

@@TheRealist137 - I don't know that I'd say "easy", more of a brain burp by the App State defense letting Manningham get behind them after he'd been pretty well contained all day. But as fun as it is to argue about it, let's face it - people who know their football take both sides. Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis, the announcers, were bewildered when it looked like App State was going to run one more play, and then when Rauch came out to kick Davis said "Yeah, they can't afford not to do it." On the other hand, Corey Lynch, the guy who blocked the last field goal try, said afterwards "I didn’t know what to think. We [went for] the field goal on first down. I was like “Why don’t we run out the clock more?”" Lynch did have what I think is the _best_ take, though, when he said "But that was the destiny. That was supposed to happen."

The main reason the big schools tend to dominate the small schools is because their guys are usually much bigger. There's a huge size difference. Add to this superior talent at the important positions and size advantage as well and the little team has little chance of moving the ball or stopping the bigger team from moving it against them. Here this wasn't the case.

2:42:30 Thom Brennaman: Good snap, good hold... AND THE KICK IS BLOCKED! APPALACHIAN STATE HAS STUNNED THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD, ONE OF THE GREATEST UPSETS IN SPORTS HISTORY! Ah... this never gets old. Still, one of the greatest college football upsets ever. This 2007 season was OFF THE CHAIN. Then again, considering that Michigan was a heavy favorite to win it all in '07, and App State was coming off of back-to-back FCS national titles in '05 and '06 (they'd win their 3rd straight title later that year), this upset may not be as big as many people thought. 2024: Hey, Michigan. You can look back and laugh at this now. Congratulations on your National Championship win!

This game also sparked what was a wild season overall, most certainly the 2007 season still goes down as the craziest one of all time. No matter where you were ranked or how much better you were than an unranked opponent nobody was safe from an upset that year. Even Kansas, UConn, South Florida, Hawaii, and Missouri were really good that year.

@@lakerskid2013 Oh, yeah, and LSU won the national title as a 2-loss team, thanks to Pitt and Oklahoma. And KANSAS ended up having the best record that year at 12-1, even better than the national champs, LSU.

No, the App. St coach did not know his team could win this one. He fully expected to go in there and get stomped. Of course he will not say that, but you know that was the case. I think this was hilarious, that a AA school went into the #5 team in the nation and beat them.

Not only that, App State had been getting all those wins with a spread offense, using undersized but fast players. Michigan had size on defense but not as much speed, so App State knew they could score points on them if they could get their receivers into space, which they did - especially in the first half. They expected to go in there and compete; maybe they didn't expect to _win,_ but they didn't expect to get blown out.

My biggest question is.....Why didn't Appalachian State run some clock with 1st down and 0:30 left? Kneel the ball on 1st down and spike it on 2nd.
@garrettevans9193

Because Michigan had a couple timeouts left, so they could not really run any clock. But that brings up this question, ¨Why didn´t App State run clock to make Michigan burn their timeouts?¨ And to that, I do not know. Coaches and players don´t always make the right decision in game time situations. Hindsight is always 20/20. Imagine playing tennis (Just an example, decided to choose tennis for no reason) in front of 1,000 people versus 10 people. In which situation would you feel more nervous and/or anxious? That can mess up your logical thinking, just like it did on some Michigan plays and some App state plays.

After the game, the ASU coach said he decided to kick it then to guard against a bad snap. If something had gone wrong with the snap, they could have fallen on the ball and still had time to get off another try. Whether that made sense depends on what you see as the chances of a bad snap versus the chances of Michigan blowing down the field in less than 30 seconds.
@jawnminn1655

The Buffalo Bills did the same thing for the Music City Miracle playoff game in early 2000. All they had to do was kick it with a few seconds left and they win 16-15 or lose missing it. No need for a kickoff at all. Coaches are dumb sometimes as how often do we see a bad snap on a fg and even if you have seen it…did it work out?
