Thank you for this video!!! Its my second time going through this process so it definitley helped watching before I went through it this time. GREAT walk through. It was nice (on my ego) seeing that I wasn't the only one struggling with a couple things on these crazy monsters. (to anyone watching) besides the tools like the cam alignment kit - just make sure you have a 13/16 wrench -works just fine for the belt tensioner no need for a special tool there. t45/t47/e14/e12 bits are needed. 1 1/16 wrench for aid in the cam alignment and also fits the tensioner. I would clean the check valve while you're in there also. It's under the vanos and beside the tensioner. star head. t45 I believe. if it's all gummed up, it will for sure affect the oil flow to the tensioner. if you're like me and wind up taking the turbo off for maintenance also, you do NOT need to enter the car in service mode. buy a cheap flexible ratchet wrench and use that on the left upper turbo nut. get creative with a hammer and (cautiously) creative with a pry bar. it saved me time and headache. and tools... the rest of the nuts can be reached fine. well... as fine as most things on the mini.

I just replaced all of the valves when I had the head cleaned up and machined. But yes the timing jig aligns the camshafts since this is an "interference engine", which means if it goes out of time, like mine, the valves will kiss the pistons.

If you lock the crank shaft in the correct position for the dowel tool at the bottom, (I use a mirror, but the tie wrap trick is also good) the cams should show a label for intake and exhaust, facing up. The camshaft alignment tools should fit at this point if it is in alignment, with a degree or two.

Thanks so much for your video. I'm an amateur, so this is very helpful. I'm replacing the timing chain and setting the alignment on my daughter's mini (to sell it) because our mechanic says it has skipped out of alignment. I have everything taken apart and have inserted the flywheel locking pin. Here's where I'm stuck: I can insert the pin with the camshafts facing up (where the writing is near the top, and the square is facing up) and I can also insert the pin when the camshafts are facing down (with the words downward). I can't get the pin in with the flywheel at any other location, but in those two positions it slides about 3/4 of the way in easily, so it seems the pin is properly inserted. The flywheel does lock when the pin is inserted, with a little bit of play. What confuses is is why it will slide in with the flywheel in two different positions. Common sense tells me that it should only go in with the flywheel in one position, which leads me to wonder if perhaps it isn't inserting all the way in (maybe 3/4 is not enough) or maybe I'm missing something. I am hoping I've explained this adequately. Any insight on this?
@miniadventure8714

The flywheel is in the right place when all pistons are at the center of the bore. That is the purpose of the 4 pieces of wire in the spark plug holes. Once all of the pieces of wire are level, it means the pistons are positioned properly. On my mini, the alignment pin in the flywheel was so tight i had to use a dremel on the bellhousing to make the hole big enough to slide the pin in. The pin shoulder should bottom out on the flywheel and the pin should be almost flush with the hole in the bellhousing. The wording on my camshafts were not exactly straight up due to the lifter springs (with the cam sprockets loose). Align the camshafts with the wording facing up and lock them down with the cam fixture. Make sure you use new bolts on both cam sprokets. Put the pre tensioner in tensioner hole and take the slack out of the chain, then tighten the cam bolts to the correct torque to yield specs. Hope this helps.

Hello, just quick questions, so, why dont just align camshafts instead of replacing chain? when you corrected marks by turning non-vanus camshaft, can you lock that on that position and do not change the chain? or is it because of chain got loose or stretched? Thanks

Hello Sir, This video series is fantastic, I am truly grateful for you taking the time to put these together. I do have a couple of questions for you though. Thanks for your time, and thank you for doing these videos.

SharpsonWheels. I got all of my parts on eBay. It takes a little while to get them. Look for the kits that have all of the camshaft sprocket bolts, crankshaft sprocket bolts, and timing chain bolts. Also, make sure the alignment kit you get has the pretensioner in it. It goes in the hole on the back of the engine where the tensioner screws in. It is used to take the slack out of the chain before you torque down the camshaft sprocket bolts.

Hi, is there a torque setting for the crank bolt after timing? I'm doing this job in 2 days. I'm halfway through ready to build back up with new chain kit etc. I noticed the crank sprocket is also floating with no keyway, so obviously crank bolt will need torqued I'd assume? I also assume crank bolt is reusable as only the cam "stretch" bolts came with the kit. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, great videos, a real help, I've just rebuilt the top end on my mini after burning a valve out saving myself several thousands. Thank you. Coming to put it together, bit worried I could time it 180 degrees out, is this possible or will the crank sensor/ecu figure it out and correct? Once you get the piston in the correct position and the camahafts lined up with the position tool, you will use the pretensioner to take the slack out of the timing chain before you tighten the camshaft pulley bolts. I found this out later because my kit didn't come with the pretensioner.

So, I have a 2010 S Clubman, pulled the valve cover and the timing chain is gone along with the upper guide, snapped and dropped I'm sure. I'm concerned, as an amateur, about getting the timing right without the chain intact. Using your "stiff wire" method (at 18 mins in this video), do you believe I can get the shafts in alignment to lock them down and complete this repair? Or do you have any other advice? Thanks for taking your time to post these videos.

TheTomFranklin. Once you use the crankshaft holding pin included in the timing kit, then align the intake and exhaust cams, the alignment tool will slide over the ends of the camshafts, as shown in the video. You must have a kit like the one I used in the video! Otherwise. it will be impossible to align them correctly.

I don't think I did. I think I may have said it jumped time, which was why the exhaust valves bent. when I was trying to put the crank pin in, I wasn't really concerned with camshaft position. that is set with the alignment jig afterward. I had to "massage" the hole in the bellhousing with a Dremel very carefully to get it to slide in.

@miniadventure8714

Joe Shearer. Never worked on a non turbo, but im sure it is very similar. You may have to loosen the sprocket on the cams to get them to lock in place. On the turbo model, there is no keyway to engage the sprocket. Once the cams and crank are aligned, the sprockets and chain are installed and tightened down. Is there a tensioner on the non turbo model? If so, make sure the tensioner is in and tight before tightening the cam sprockets.

I know this is older video but, do the wires have to be all the same height when 1st cylinder is on a compression stroke(going up) or intake ( going down)? does it matter? is this the concern with being 180 degrees out?
@miniadventure8714
2 жыл бұрын
When all of the wires are the same height above the top of the block, all of the cylinders are equal heights in their respective bores. That allows you to place the holder in the flywheel to hold it still while you set the camshaft. Most engine timing is set when the #1 cylinder is at TDC. This is a Peugeot engine so they set it with all cylinders in the middle of the bores.
@miniadventure8714

It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. You will line up the camshafts with a jig and that is what sets up the correct timing.

one question, if the tensioner bolt has failed could one just replace that bolt and avoid removing the entire top of the head? and avoid spending money on the cam tools ?
@miniadventure8714
8 жыл бұрын
yes, as long as the timing chain stretch is within tolerance. there is a measurement tool that screws into the tensioner hole with another bolt in it. after it is seated in the hole, screw the measurement bolt down until it just touches the timing chain. then remove the entire tool from the tensioner hole without moving the measurement bolt. then check the length of the bolt. the chiltons has a good step by step on how it's done and what the tolerance is.

So before you adjusted the cams the markings weren't facing straight up?? that means without loosening the cam sprocket you could have rotate the crank to bring the cams to its correct position and then insert the crank tool. Because if your camshaft weren't lined up correctly with the crank, either the engine was running rough or piston valve interference.
@miniadventure8714

I figured out later that the timing chain had jumped time, due to a piece of the upper guide bracket getting between the crank gear and chain. This caused all of the exhaust valves to bend, which also led to the videos on cylinder head replacement.

Hey do you have to replace the camshaft bolts???? Nive video btw
@miniadventure8714
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the bolts must be replaced. They are torque to yield. The cam sprockets are not keyed so they have to maintain a certain pressure. If you reuse the bolts, the proper pressure between the sprocket and camshaft will not be correct and the sprocket could slip and cause the timing to change.
