This video helped me avoid a costly repair. Couple tips after I completed the job: - Use the tools suggested at the end of the video. An 8mm swivel socket for 1/4" drive is crucial for getting to the back screw. Ordered one off amazon as I couldn't find one locally. The long 1/4" extension is very helpful as well given the limited work area and limited vision you'll have. With the extension and the swivel socket, I was able to unbolt the back bolt without even needing to use my hand to guide the socket head to the bolt. I used a decent light, and I could see the bolt. I simply guided the socket to the head, then slowly and carefully turned the socket. Imagine that you're diffusing a bomb and patience and a steady hand is key. Take your time. -As someone else stated in another comment, the knuckle on the swivel socket turns easier when sitting a certain way. You can get about 3/4 turn before you need to reset your position, but reset your position every time. Feel it out and you'll get there. Use the swivel socket on the front screw to become more familiar with its movement. - Lining the splines back up can be tricky. The blend door only opens so far and the new actuator motor may not line up like it didn't for mine. CAREFULLY pull the new actuator motor casing apart by lifting the tabs along the sides. Try not to break these for obvious reasons. You can then lift up the inner gears and position the splines where you need them and then put it back together. Practice with the old actuator to get comfortable if you need to. TIP: You can also use the gear out of the old actuator to move the blend door. That is how I stumbled on to lining the actuator motor up manually. - LIGHT!! As I said above, enough light will show you the back screw and you can gauge your progress however slow it might be. Maneuver the light around to get better angles. Light will also show you the orientation of the gear for the blend door once you remove the actuator motor. - Patience and maybe a beer or two. Good luck!

Just did this replacement last weekend (took about 4-5 frustrating hours). We couldn't get the right leverage to get the driver side screw out through the access from the air bag side. We ended up pulling the center air vent cover off, then removed the radio/clock display out, then used a flexible drill extension with a socket adapter to the 8mm socket, then guided the socket from the access where the airbag was - and was able to get the leverage needed to remove and replace the screws. We spent some time making sure the alignment of the actuator gear was identical to the old one that came out... not sure if that was the proper way to set it, but we hoped it would be close as we never wanted to remove it ever again.

This is a great video and it works. Dealership diagnosed the blend door actuator as the cause of no A.C. This fixed my a.c.. 2008 ford escape. See tips below: HELFUL TIPS - BE PATIENT! removing the two screws is hard, the drivers side one especially. You need to press up with a pry bar on the venting running above (plus remove one screw holding it down). I was able to get the pry bar pinched into a place where I didn't have to hold it with my hand or shoulder - created an inch or two wiggle room. This gives you just enough room to see what you are doing. The passenger side screw is quick. The drivers side screw took an hour or two to remove and put back in. It can be removed as suggested in the video with the long extension and knuckle joint. Cutting or silicon not nessissary if you are patient and take breaks when you get frustrated. Little progress is better than no progress. Be careful not to risk dropping any tools or screws...you won't get them back. I used a combination of feeling with fingers and eyes to get the socket on the screws. Sometimes you need to switch it up. When the blend door actuator is free you should be able to pull the drivers side screw out with it. To get that screw out the very last bit you might need to gently pull up on the actuator. Don't try twisting before the screw is out as that seemed to make it impossible to get the 8mm socket on. Again no need to cut. The screw will go back in the same way and easier than you expect. With such a sharp angle; the knuckle joint works smoother at certain points in its rotation so pay attention to that also. Flood the area with light so you can see inside. Seems obvious but really helps. I didn't have to unhook the battery. When you unbolt the airbag, pull the whole assembly out and place it on your dash (fyi it may scratch your dash). Everything else is a piece of cake. I made sure I had the temp dial on the dash console set right in the middle. Not sure if it matters but it worked, as suggested in the video.

Just completed this on a 2008 Ford Escape V6. Agree with everyone-- NOT an easy project. It took me a little under three hours. Highly recommend 14+ inches of extension like shown in the video. I taped all the socket joints so I wouldn't have to worry about tools falling in the dash...

the Blend door in this Video is for the heat and cold selection only and not for the Floor /defrost /heat /vent selection ! the blend door actuator that controls floor /vents / Defrost is a second Blend door actuator located on the drivers side above the Brake pedal it's Vertical

I can see this part above the brake pedal, but Rockauto is only showing the one this guy replaced. Any idea where to buy the one that goes above brake pedal?? sure looks easier

thanks! So this is the part that regulates which vent the air blows out of? I have cold air , it just blows out the defrost and heat vents though, not the main dash vents. Checked fuses and all good.

thanks for that! :) I was thinking the symptoms didn't match up with my problem. dang kid at Auto zone assured me, but I knew he was over confident. Haynes manual doesn't say anything on the issue that I can find... you likely saved me a lot of time and effort, because my hands do not fit into any of these spots.

Only one problem... how do you remove the air ducting?
@MrBillStarr

This was super tricky. Removing the screws was not easy. What I did was pried up on the vent tube to get it a bit out of the way. Need to remove the plug first. Just beating around in there I was able to get the front screw out with a swivel similar to his set up. No way I was going to get the back bolt out so I ended up reaching in with a hacksaw blade and cut off the little tab that holds the screw. After pulling the actuator out there is enough room for a stubby wrench to the the screw and tab out. I wasn’t going to get the screw back in so I just put some silicone on the bottom to hold it a bit. It has three studs in addition to the two screws so I think it will be fine.

This is NOT an easy project. The video is kind of mis-leading, as it does not show any of the work actually being done. You need to loosen and remove screws holding the ducting for the passenger side in order to allow it to move, and even then you cannot fit your hand usefully into the tiny space where this actuator is located. Word of caution: If you (and the chances are massively high) drop any screws or toolks (like sockets) into the plenum space behind where this actuator is mounted, you're screwed. Like, major screwed. It is impossible to recover without removing the WHOLE dash (involves removal of steering wheel.) This took me three hours and a lot of cussing to complete. All for an $11 part off of RockAuto. The engineer at Ford who designed this needs to be crucified.

Use a 5/16 closed end side of a box wrench turnde upside down to loosen and tighten the back screw. You will save hours of frustration.

Bob S, I just want to so Thank You for your comment! My husband and I had spend several VERY frustrating hours trying to get the back bolt in and just couldn't get it. We saw this video before we started and just couldn't get it. We decided to watch it again and read the comments and we saw yours and tried it... 15 min and we had it... You seriously saved our marriage! Thank you again!!!

Damn, you left out all the cussing and also a picture of your hand size... When you said buried in there, you aren't lying... They are a biotch to get to... Good job on getting this changed out. Were you hearing a loud taping noise when you were starting the car prior to replacement? I'm currently trying to determine if my '08 Escape also needs a new Blend Door Actuator or if it's something else. What symptoms did you experience beforehand? Thanks, if you can answer.

Yes I had a loud tapping noise when selecting midway between hot and cold. I did the replacement and everything was fine for a month. I Now have the tapping when rotating the knob to full hot and when starting the car if the knob is at full hot. I will double check that the door moves freely and this time I think I will go with the Motorcraft actuator.

+poster012345 Thanks. Trying to replicate the issue but so far I get a low vibrating hum with the fans full blast it seems. as I change the temp knob the pitch of that hum changes a bit. I have to keep testing before I condemn the temp blend actuator.

if if you have the automatic electronic hvac system you can run a self diagnostic test....1 turn on vehicle 2 turn on hvac system 3 hold power and defrost 4 within two seconds hit floor defrost 5 system will run test and show codes if error found. otherwise 888 is no errors found (i think) 6 exit test by pressing any other hvac button....important - do not turn off vehicle while test is running

Ok. I have replaced the faulty blend door actuator but my escape still has the same issue of incorrect temperature-to-setting ratio. When set at 60 degrees the air is cold, but after turning to 75ish the air becomes hot (like maxed out). Only passenger side is affected. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?
