The S2000 was Hondas 50th anniversary present to itself back in 1999 as a year 2000 model. They wished to build an iconic car that would be somewhat of a throwback to its roots in automobile manufacturing. That is why they brought back the "S" badge reminiscent of the S660 and S800. They wanted this car to have a front-mid engine, rear wheel drive platform with a removable top. Everything is geared to the driver and it is one of the most engaging vehicles ever produced. This formula, as easy as it sounds to make, is actually hard to come by. And when executed correctly, one ends up with a car that will one day be revered in the same manner as it's predecessor, the Original NSX.

nice review zed, do yourself a favour and buy an S, preferably the 2004/5 AP2 better wheels, cabin, not drive by wire, no driver assists, read the later run out models had a few problems. I had the same dilemma last year, went to see a few Z4's and I liked the creature comforts and engine torque/noise and the look, but then I saw and drove the S2000, what a revelation! bought one with a hard top and drove it back from Scotland to London. Getting snapped up pretty quick here in the UK and prices going up, they're quite rare on the road. Just a great piece of engineering low running costs, and timeless looks, a sure fire fun classic.

Redline is 8200 rpm. The thing about the S2k is, it churns out revs quick. if you're in the right gear. It is plenty fast, 5.3 sec in the hands of a really capable driver. 5.6 for me all day. At 115k miles the owner of that car probably drove it daily.
@RantTherapist

You're talking 5.6 zero to sixty, yeah?
@Xxyion86

You should definetly drive this car again and rev it out more. From all the shots of the RPM gauge, you shifted right at 6k RPM. V-Tech doesnt kick in until that point and you get a huge surge of torque and power. Highly recommend you try shifting at redline so you can experience V-tech and the power the car actually has.

Stop putting it in neutral as you're driving along!
@mindtheyoutubegap

Does that ruin the motor? If so why?
@andrewsmactips
7 жыл бұрын
1. Under normal circumstances, the gear you are meshing with is close in speed to the gear you are leaving so there's little mechanical strain due to rotational inertia changes; when you travel in neutral, parts of the gear train are essentially at rest, so when you then shift into a gear you're connected the part of the gear train driven by the engine to part of the gear train doing pretty-much nothing - not good for the gearbox in the long run. 2. Some folks think they're saving fuel by doing this, however, most modern fuel systems cut all fuel on the over-run and let the wheels drive the engine for a while - coasting in neutral negates this as the system is now providing idle fuel to keep the engine running. 3. It's considered good driving form to always be always in the correct gear and ready to use it in anger, so - bad form to be flailing along disconnected

I don’t understand why it’s redlined at 8k. My UK 2007 model goes to 9k. As for the noise, I suspect much is because of the ragtop. A hardtop is much quieter.

if I'm not mistaken, this was the s2000 on middle country road... before it was broken into. I looked at it after about 2 weeks of it being shown off on the side of the busy road. Top was cut open, seats and gauges gone. The car salesmen do not know the value of this car. I own an '03 s2000 and I was curious about this one at the time.

So if you were to get the S2k would you keep the Z4? I know it sounds a bit pointless and you said the low end torque wouldn't be missed considering the high revving engine, but the z4 is still awesome.

in my ap1 i can shift at 3-4 thousand rpm around town and its fine its a car u need to know wat gear to be in tho if u mash it in any gear below 4-5 k its not going to be fast obviously i get mine to 5 k then floor it vtec kicks in at 6 but if im racing someone i start at 6500 or so so its in the power already lol the most noticeable fldifference i feel between ap1 is the gears are longer the transmission and rear ratios are different. nice review

Someone told me that if the interior gets stolen from an S2K that makes the clean title rebuilt all of a sudden. Is that true or is it bullshit? Cause I was looking at ads and stuff and one was rebuilt, and this guy kept telling me that it had a rebuilt title because of theft where they took out the seats by cutting through the soft top, and I don't know why but it seems like it's possibly true but also seems like bullshit at the same time.

+zed4me I mean I'm sure a 986 Boxster could give it a proper run for its money. They're both around the 10000 dollar mark, the s2000 seen here might be close to 20 thousand though. Irrespective of that and maintenance costs of owning a Porsche, you can't say there isn't anything that can compete with the S2000. And I'm saying this as someone who has a deep love for s2000's
