2008 Infiniti FX35 3.5L came in saying it was struggling to go up a hill. No mention of any smoke but if you're driving on a sunny day you might not see it.
Only code it had was a P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire. I fired it up and noticed she was a smokin! Definitely oil and not coolant. It was running a bit rough but definitely not a dead misfire. Nissan/Infiniti doesn't give you much useful live data to go off so I just went after pulling the spark plug.
We haven't seen this vehicle before but when I went into it I saw someone had been there before. Lots of things were disturbed/broken. Cylinder #2 had a new coil. The hold down bolt for the coil was only a couple threads in. Etc.
A quick look down the hole with my boroscope showed massive oil consumption. The misfire appeared to mainly just be the oil fouled spark plugs. The oil appeared to all be coming from the valves and not piston rings. So what do you do? Condemn the whole engine or perform a valve job?
I went to look at the next cylinder and almost regretted it! The threads were almost non existent! I didn't think I'd be able to get a new spark plug back in the hole! That cylinder (#4) was much the same as #2. Massive oil consumption.
The signs of questionable repairs with the levels of oil in both cylinders made me not want to entertain the idea of performing any repairs on this engine. Sometimes you just get the feeling of when something's going to be never ending... We'd only be interested in replacing the whole engine and even that's not super appetizing. Ya gotta pick your battles!
