@@ethanweeter2732 I believe Chipper made the "porn stache" comment to the ump. Had he not, I think he'd just mention "the ump had an awful porn stache" but wouldn't claim he said it to the guy. As far as the baiting, in the clip you can see the pitcher say "how could you miss that" twice. So it also seems believable the ump challenged the pitcher to repeat himself.

Yes, for sure, but I believe that a computer should be telling the home plate ump if the pitch is a strike or not. Yes, it takes away from the human element, but some of these umps are either blind or biased. The important thing is for the calls to be right, so that no team is cheated. They have reviews now to try to correct some of the umpires mistakes. Let a pitch location determine if a pitch is in the strike zone or not. It is totally needed since umpires are so mistake prone.

In Bill Hahn's "rookie season", 1992, he ran Lonnie Smith and Bobby Cox after a similarly shitty call that Smith took a pitch that was no where near a strike and was wrung up. Ever since then, he has had no patience for the Braves, and made some seriously suspect calls against them. The fact that he grew that "asshole" mustache says volumes about his character or persona.

when i first got started in umpiring in my early 30's, i had the best umpiring mentor on the planet. he taught a method of body-positioning behind the plate that allows you to correctly call balls and strikes regardless of where the catcher sets up, or where the batter is standing, or what happens after the pitch crosses the plate. i have tried my best to share this method with fellow umpires over the years, but unfortunately, too many guys are not willing to change their methods even though it would make them better (definition: more consistent) plate umpires. this particluar mlb umpire could learn from him.

I know this should have been called strike 3, and it ultimately lead to the batter getting an RBI single. I get it is upsetting, but I have no idea what he said to the umpire. I've heard of players and coaches saying really atrocious things to an umpire that probably warranted an ejection. People may not like the rule, but unless they can convince the Playing Rules Committee to change it, this is how it is going to be. Official Baseball Rule 8.02(a): Appeal of Umpire Decisions Any umpire’s decision which involves judgment, such as, but not limited to, whether a batted ball is fair or foul, whether a pitch is a strike or a ball, or whether a runner is safe or out, is final. No player, manager, coach, or substitute shall object to any such judgment decisions. Rule 8.02(a) Comment: Players leaving their position in the field or on base, or managers or coaches leaving the bench or coaches box, to argue on BALLS AND STRIKES will not be permitted. They should be warned if they start for the plate to protest the call. If they continue, they will be ejected from the game.
