Thank you big time for this video! I like that you showed a couple things right up front as to what NOT to do! And the air chisel trick was a life saver. I already had the chisel, but never would have thought about that. Since my truck is 10yrs old and all original I went ahead and replaced idler pulley, belt tensioner, thermostat housing, thermostat, fan clutch and belt all together!

Mine is over 10 years old now (2013). I'm planning to replace the belt and thermostat when I do the water pump. I'm on the fence about the tensioner. Do you have a part number for what you used? I'm seeing them range drastically in price, from $35 to over $100.

Good vid. Fyi that plug above the thermostat is a high point coolant bleeder. Leave it open. Fill with coolant until it comes out the bleeder. Thanks.
@al-mubdizahir8704

Does the truck need to be running?
@jakemason9436
Күн бұрын
Not when you initially refill as the bleeder hole is at the top of the system. Add coolant to the minimum line in the overflow bottle. Then once the system won’t take any additional coolant then you start it with the plug out back but the rad cap off. Run so that the system burps out any trapped air. A few mins only. Replace rad cap. Now Run the heater too. Allow it to reach operating temp and thermostat opens. Then it may burp a bit more into overflow bottle Top off as needed to max line hot. DO NOT OPEN THE RAD CAP until fully cooled off.

Just a tip, if’ Ya don’t have the air hammer tool thingy, it’s really simple to remove that lower piece of the fan shroud and then remove the rest of the fan shroud and the electric fan at the same time, and then you can remove the water pump with the fan still attached. I stuck the lower hose piece from the water pump over a jack handle and then put Vice Grips in the pulley and then was able to break that fan nut loose. Also nice to have the extra room when ya install the new pump, and then with the engine fan still out of the way, re-install the electric fan and the shroud and install the engine fan from the bottom.

I watched your video over and over again and thought I was ready to do the job. I bought a water pump and radiator because I want to overhaul the system, however, I am having a lot of trouble just getting started. I cannot remove the fan. The nut is frozen on. I tried the big wrench and hammer first, and when that didn't work, I tried the air chisel like you did in the video. Then I bought a pneumatic fan clutch wrench ($$), but no luck with that either. It is just not coming loose. I'm anxious to get on with job. Do you have any suggestions? My compressor produces 5 CFM @ 90 psi. Do you know if that's enough power? Thanks

Just think, a small allen wrench does the trike. You put the short end in a hole in the pulley and wedge the long end into the fan belt tensioner bracket and it stops the pulley from being able to move . It was the easiest part of the job.

It took me maybe ~3 hours to do, but I was also making a video which takes longer. So I would not think a shop would need the truck for more than a day. I bet a somebody that has done this a bunch of times (a dodge dealership technician) could do this in 1.5 hours. That being said, flat rate time is what you would pay, so you may pay for 3-4 hours. Gee , glad i moved back south before my 2012 started to rust out and get nasty. PS. don't bother putting your clutch fan back on or your fan shroud and take off that electric fan and replace it all with a electric fan from a 1500 V6 model. Be careful you get the right year because the electrical connection is different. Plenty of KZitem videos on the conversation. It actually looks good and your new water pump will last longer than your engine will.

That’s a good question! I honestly don’t know the answer. I would think worst case scenario, you could rip the original one out and thread the hold with a tap, add a hose barb fitting and just stick a rubber hose on it? That being said - a new pump is not that expensive. So it may not be the worst idea to just replace the whole thing if yours already has a lot of miles on it.

you have to drain the cooling system to change the water pump?
@WiringRescue
2 жыл бұрын
Generally Yes. If not, when you pull the pump off the block, all the coolant in the engine splashes out everywhere.

Thanks for this! I also have a ram1500 2009 with the hemi. My problem has been to fill coolant as it won’t let me top it up. Right now there is about 8liters or so and the coolant level on the cap on the radiator is barely moving. Also no heat in the car. Any tips?

i pulled many water pumps this one is by far the worst one ever. good notes, the fan shroud comes off first. Pull the plastic pins, the remove the shroud bolts then pull the lower shield off remove the clip that hold it to the radiator top and bottom.unplug the radiator fan and remove the fan and shroud at the same time. this leaves plenty of room to get the the mechanical fan a lot easier. in my case that fan wont come off with any trick I know and all the ones on here I tried before i found this great video. I even made a tool to hold the pulley with 1/4 steel coping the same tool i have for older chryslers and one for GM. any other tricks besides cranking the engine with a wrench in the fan nut? up date, had to use a 50" pipe wrench to hold the pulley and a cheater pipe on the fan nut.

My Ram isn’t blowing me heat and it’s chilly I could it be my water pump
@WiringRescue
2 жыл бұрын
The most common reason I’ve seen for having no heat is that you are low on antifreeze. See if it’s full (when the engine is cold).
@christiancisneros3776
2 жыл бұрын
@@WiringRescue it’s full of antifreeze and now the truck would only mark one quart of engine heat still ice cold air when I have it on heat do you think it could be a simple thing like a heating core ?
@WiringRescue
2 жыл бұрын
@@christiancisneros3776 - if the engine temperature is not coming up normally, I would think it’s more likely your thermostat causing the problem. But I’m just some guy on the internet. Don’t trust me. Ask somebody you trust! Are the heater hoses warm? If not, then you need to find out why. If they are hot, then you need to determine why that heat isn’t making it inside the truck. It could be a heater core, a heater blend door, a heater blend door actuator, the hvac controls, or possibly a few other things.
