Hopefully an informative video on how to remove the gas lid trim housing, button, and diagnosing an issue with the power release not working.
Removing the housing is easy, I found it best to pry on the side and work my way towards the bottom. Do not try to pry it out from the top or it will probably break the retaining clip. Simply do as I do.
Next up you'll see me test the positive and negative on the switch, in which both passed. Moving beyond this, we have the actual contacts. One inside the button and one in the base of the switch. They create a momentary short when touched together, thus popping the gas lid as designed.
I initially thought the gunk on the contacts to be the culprit but that wasn't the case. Turns out the contacts weren't making contact with the button depressed. The contact that is in the button itself pulls out easily, no clips or worry of breaking anything. I attempted a quick fix by cutting the spring in two and putting one piece in front of that contact and the other on the back, sandwiching it and giving it extra space to come down and touch the base' contacts. It didn't work as I intended, or at all for that matter. Now I've got to scrounge up a small spring to replace the original one.
You'll see the concept here though, all that's needed is to space the contact a tad towards the other. A small washer would work but I didn't have any on hand. For now I've left the button out, snapping the base back into the housing so I can stick a screwdriver down to spark the two contacts to open the lid, temporarily.
Make sure to clean the contacts on both the base and the button, a smidge of dielectric grease wouldn't hurt either.
This is on my 2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 4cyl. Filmed with my droid, sorry for the shakiness!
