Toby Gerhart set a school record with 224 rushing yards, leading Stanford to a 51-42 upset over #7 Oregon. The victory made Stanford bowl eligible for the first time since 2001.
The Cardinal jumped out to a 31-14 lead over the visiting Ducks, who scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to six with 2:38 left. Stanford recovered Oregon's onside kick, however, and kicker Nate Whitaker sealed the game with his third successful field goal attempt of the game, the final one coming from 48 yards out.
With redshirt freshman Andrew Luck at quarterback, the Stanford offense dominated the time of possession 37:23-22:17. The game demonstrated the sharp contrasts between the two teams, with Stanford relying on its methodical power running game and the fast-paced Oregon offense proving it could strike on any play.
