On October 25, 2010, Forrest Fenn sat for an interview with Sante Fe Radio Cafe. In it he said, "I went to this clearing in Vietnam. Eh...a friend and I. And we tripped over some headstones that were left over, we think, from the French Indo-China War. But I, I tripped over one that was made of stone. And when I turned it over, it had a very poignant inscription on it. "If you should ever think of me when I have passed this veil and wish to please my ghost, forgive a sinner and smile at a homely girl." And, we were rushed because we had to get out of there - this was enemy country and... But, uh, it preyed on my mind for a number of years and I built a story around that. It had a lasting affect on me."
