I had a water leak in the back hatch every time it rained. The internet lead me to the back brake light being loose, this video showed me how to remove the panel to tighten the screws. THANK YOU!

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this video Jared. I was cleaning snow off of my 2010 last Friday here in Michigan, and noticed that the third brake light was VERY loose. It was to the point that I could actually pull it right off, with very little effort. When I woke up on Saturday morning I got at it, and it was super easy. When I removed the inside trim I realized that both washer nuts were completely off, and fell right into my hands. So glad that I did not have to fish those out of my hatchback door. The only issue that I had was how much pressure to apply taking the trim off as I was afraid I was going to crack it. Once I felt the trim detach a bit though, it was smooth sailing from there. Thanks so much again for saving me time and money instead of taking it into the dealer. Now I have more money to spend on vinyl records ha ha. Thanks again Jared, you rock!

Thank you for explaining the removal of the trim. Changing lights is easy, but breaking plastic trim to get to the bulbs is even easier if not done the right way! 👍🏼

Thanks for the Brake light tip. I was looking for it in the dark, no way. Everyone should have those plastic panel tools, you need them for lots and lots of things. A whole lot easier than changing the low beam head lamps. Thanks again,,,

As for the low beams, I pop the grill/bumper assembly and remove the headlight assembly, and change the bulbs at the workbench. It's really not hard to do that way. I'd rather do that then contort myself through the fender from the wheel well.

Fyi....it's not held in place by screws. They are 8mm washer nuts.

I used a 5/16" socket. The plastic tool Jared used looked handy, so I got the Nylon Pry Bar Installer Kit from Harbor Freight.

Thank you! Mine just went out and yours was the only video I found. I have a 2011 Outback. I thought I'd just be able to buy bulbs. Smhl.

Hi Jared. My third brake light on my Subaru Outback 2011 is not working but the other two lights are fine . So how do I know if I have to replace the third light for a new one?. Did you do a test to know that eventually could work or you just replaced it right away ?. Thanks a lot. Great video. Christian.

It's a LED panel so the light will only partially illuminate (like half of the panel will light up). Ideally you can have someone hit the brakes for you as you look

My 2012 Outback had both the washer nuts come off. Had to fish them out of there. 8 years of driving on dirt roads I guess.

is there some type of sealant that i should use to make it water-tight, or is the foam & screw pressure enough to keep it from leaking?
@jaredmac11

No leaks for me. Foam should last the life of the light.

@jaredmac11 my light is fine but there's leaking into my hatch, I assume from failed foam around the light. If I just want to replace the foam what should I get? Or is it easier to just replace the whole unit and use whatever might come with it?

@@kevcrabill7921 i used automotive silicon (comes in either red or blue) and squeezed that around about a 1/4" away from the opening. no leaks since
