My cousin, a friend and I done this back in 2012 to a '10 1500, '11 3500 and a '12 2500. The friend got the doors from the dealer and the filters came from one of the chain auto parts stores. If I remember correctly it was the filter for a 2010 dodge caliber that we used. everything fit perfect but my only complaint was the reduced airflow from the vents even with the filter in the correct flow direction. I wasn't that much of a drop but it was noticeable compared to no filter.

Luckily you dont have the 2007 body style mega cab....air flow sucks! We have learned that you can piece the kit together if need be. Its still god to find a place that offers it as a complete kit. It certainly will save the evaporator from getting clogged out the outside due to dust/dirt building up on the wet evaporator. I try to sale them to all the work trucks that come in that have the nice dust layer on the interior items so that they dont have to spend more in the future. Great video! I have an '06 Ram 2500 MegaCab (diesel) with terrible A/C performance. Even with the fan on high, all it does is make more noise with very little increase in actual air flow! Wondering if the condenser is clogged like you showed or if there is another fix? I don't want to drop my dash, but I also don't want to take it to a dealer to fix it $$$. Any shops you recommend in So. Cal. to do something like this? Thanks!

Its possible the evaporator is partially clogged. I have a 2007 Megacab and air flow sucks. I havent taken the time to remove the hvac box to see if the evaporator is covered in anything.....too many other items needing done first. I would like to see if there was a change but for now I know your pain.....air flow sucks. I only know one tech and thats Brian from How To Automotive.....he is based out of San Diego. Not sure if thats a job he up for.....its not hard and doesnt take that long. Its worth checking with him if you like to see.

Great video. Kinda sucks that RAM did not take this small step to help preserve the life of the AC system. Seems like one way to get repair business for their dealerships.
@MotorCityMechanic
8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Fox The odd thing is that the cabin filter cut out is there and just screaming for a filter and lid. Not sure why it was never made functional. As far as repair business......keep in mind the dealerships are independently owned and Chrysler only makes money on the parts if the evaporator is purchased....otherwise the evaporator can be cleaned and reinstalled. I actually purchased some household evaporator/condenser foam cleaner and repeatedly sprayed in on an evaporator that the customer wanted replaced and it did a fairly good job without taking the dash and hvac box out. If it was mine and it happened.....I would keep using the foam cleaner until majority was gone and install the cabin filter kit. I am glad there is a kit to help stop the issue....but like you, wish it was already done by Chrysler from the beginning. Thanks for the comment and for watching. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already

One thing to consider is that automobiles have had air-conditioning since 1940 (first offered by Packard, followed in 1941 by Cadillac and the first modern system in 1953 by Chrysler's Airtemp division installed in 1953 Imperial). Cabin air filters are a useful but very new (younger than most millennials, for example). No one complained of premature A/C issues for decades. Certainly the technology for a paper filter in the system existed since the early 1960s I take issue with badmouthing the lack of one today. I appreciate the availability but it is not an absolute necessity. And, yes, my truck and car (2019 Tradesman and 2013 200) have one. My 2001 3500 does not. In 2018 I did change the evaporator not due to clogging but due to leaking. It could still be seen through.

I modified a Weller (pencil type) soldering iron tip to except a modified #11 Ex-ado blade and made a easy perfect cutout without any loose derby getting down into the fan. I cut down a new larger cabin filter I had left over from a car I sold on my band saw. Size 7.25" X 8" and about .75" thick. I used duct tape instead of the $18 leaky front plate with the easy to brake off plastic latches. Duck tape was designed for air ducks and a 9" strip seals tightly.

Its something that has gotten added over time. Much like tire pressure sensors eventually became required by law. Cabin filters once were an item that only came on a few vehicles and no one knew what they were. Its not common for them to clog but it does happen. @MotorCityMechanic

Sounds like thats a great method....box cutter by itself is a bit tough, add some heat and it should move like butter. Clogged heater cores are internal and the only way to really check is to feel for a temperature difference going in and coming out. You can try flushing it using a water hose. Take both hoses at the heater core off. Flush coolant thru one pipe and then watch what comes out the other. Then switch and flush it thru the other pipe. Keep doing this until you dont see anything other then just water come out. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe!

Yeah, I've been so busy lately that I forgot that this is something I wanted to do... So, since I have a 2010 3500, and you are "The Man", well, not "THEE" Man, but, definitely one of them, here I go... Thanks for the How to Videos, Hope the Family is doing well !!!!!

Man thats absolulty the best video ive found for dash removal. Clogged Evaporator i never thought of wow what a mess that thing was. Im having heat issues in mu 2010 w/ 6.7 getting ready to pull it apart. This just made me more comfortable attempting it. Question if the evap coil was that bad what did the heater core look like ?

Okay everyone. I did this thing with new razors and such. It is not as easy as this video suggests. 1: Wear gloves, I couldn’t tell where I was so I had to take mine off. Got a few cuts from banging around while trying to make the cuts. 2: get a light in there to help you see what you’re doing. My hands and equipment made so many blind spots. 3: it’s not easy to cut through that plastic. The two top corners are reinforced. You’ll want to try to cut perpendicular. The top corners are going to give you some trouble. 4: the filter that comes with the kit is crap. Search and order a good filter before you do this. 5: the cover door does not want to go on easily. Hook the left side then use a tool to push the right side (very important) CLIP in. It is very hard but push on the clip release to get it to latch. 6: you will have to wrestle the filter in if you purchase a good one. 7: okay good luck and once you start you’ll have to finish. 😀. Oh and it took me about an hour and I had to do a lot of contorting. Hope this info helps someone. Please share this because there are a lot of videos on how to do this and I cannot post on all. 😀

Great video. My only question is, I got the kit form geno's garage and did the things according to your instructions. All seems ok except that the cover does not snap in place, is it suppose to? Thanks for your help.

Thank you, Thank you! I had checked a couple of other sites and of course no help! You informed me that I indeed did not have a door to install the filter I wanted to change! Great job, and thank you again!

Awesome vid. I couldn't wait to order a kit via the mail so I cut out a piece of filter (8"X8") from a large home HVAC filter that I purchased at HomeDepot. Installed it and put two strips of Duct tape across the door opening making sure to seal it around the edges well. Works just fine.

There is a very good chance that that yours has one already. I recommend taking the glove box out and inspecting. They started adding them about 1-2 years ago so you may already have it installed. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe

One of the easiest mods ever! Chrysler uses the same cabin filter door across a ton of vehicle platforms! Once I got the filter in there the clips were nice and tight! Absolutely awesome!

@@MotorCityMechanicMy 03/2015, would it have the filter or not? Also I don't get heat, a/c is great. Air flow is fine, actuators seem to work properly. Gonna try flushing it several times to see if that helps do you or could you do a video on that?
