This was Roddick's last Masters win. He had ZERO forehand winners up until 3-4 in the 2nd set, then started ripping it. You can tell that it really shook Nadal. I wish we saw a lot more of that version of Roddick throughout his career, instead of the big serving grinder style that he often used.

DonteKeys Roddick was a monster back in 2003-2005. Monster serve and monster forehand, so hard to handle. But then he changed his style and his forehand went missing forever. He had some great isolated performances occasionally, like Wimbledon 2009, this tournament or his last match against Federer, where his forehand turned god mode. Roddick had a great career, would have been better not only if not for Federer, but also if his forehand and aggressive style wouldn’t have disappeared throughout his career. Also a better backhand would have helped.

@@saidmiranda1989 actually it was because Federer broke his trust. That is the real Roddick here, a guy who can face anyone. The problem was having the best player in history in his 3 best seasons in the other side. And Federer is also known to be an expert at playing against big servers. Everything conspired against Roddick's career. Even so, he was a great tennis player, but without a doubt he could have been much more.

Wish he had a coach that told him to aggressively use the forehand and play a little looser. He could have added a few more Grand Slams for sure.

hurts to think about. He tried changing his forehand to have more topspin and his consistency strictly to beat Federer. But that made it so weak that he couldn't beat anyone else to even reach Federer. His old forehand was so good. If he kept it, he would've still been competitive going forward as Federer exited his absolute prime in around 2006/2007

@@slamandjam2 I'm not so sure it was just to beat Federer; honestly I truly believe that he got abit of dead arm so he was forced to change his technique. His serve average MPH and spin actually started to drop abit past early 2005, along with his forehand not being as deadly as it once was.

@@namtran512 The thing is though, that forehand at 0-40, who the fuck does that against Nadal on a slow hardcourt, the pace and spin on that thing was deadly. I'm not sure I fully agree with Roddick getting a dead arm. He was always naturally a defensive player. Even in 2003 and 2004 I wouldn't have said Roddick ball-bashed from the baseline (although he would rip it given the chance) and it's clear to see that, he just happened to have a lot more pace on his standard groundies than 05+. The pure drive standard model he used in 03/04 can certainly get more pace than the GT model (have hit with both). Roddick lost his power I think in 2011, his serve speed dropped considerably. Never was going to win many majors due to the conditions, but might have been able to add an extra one. I don't think Roddick's weakness per say was going to the loopy forehand, because his BH improved in the Connors era considerably to the point his BH was his strongest shot except for the occasions in Dubai and this match where he did well on the FH. What I do think hurt Roddick more than anything, especially against Federer, was arguably having the worst return in the top 20, and foul approach shots. I think I am in the minority when I say I think Roddick actually was kind of a decent volleyer - but his approach shots and movement around the net was not that good. This is quite strange, as Roddick comes across as quite a smart guy and has had many coaches; I am surprised he kept going with the maniac approaches. US Open 2007 is a perfect example. He was pretty much even with Federer in terms of level, but lost that match due to the approaches he made in that game when he didn't really need to come to the net. Roddick's return was so bad people thought Federer had the best serve in the world at one point due to consistently 'outserving' Roddick in their matches. I put '' because it's a myth.

If Roddick would have played this forehand, he would have won 5 grand slam atleast

I think 5 is pushing it. I certainly think if he was more aggressive with his forehand and the return (like he was here at 4-3 onwards and Dubai 08 against Nadal) he would have comfortably beaten Federer at Wimbledon 09. Whilst he played well at W09 (he played some tricky opponents even before the final), I do think some of the key points (especially at 6-2 in the tiebreak) would have been won if he bombed his forehand; If you can blast Nadal off a slow hardcourt then you can blast anyone off the court on grass. Roddick I think could have won W10 playing this way, but he would need to make the shots and serve well. I think I would favour a big hitting Roddick over Nadal on grass/hard just in terms of matchups (i am not saying Roddick is better than Nadal that would be insane). I just think Roddick's serve and forehand we see above when used correctly is scary good - like the best. I've not seen a scarier 1st serve and forehand combo like it.
