A Great Boat for Loopers…
The Great Loop is a 6,000 mile circumnavigation of the eastern United States. It’s an epic voyage that consists of travelling up (or down) almost the entire Eastern seaboard of the US, mainly via the Intracoastal waterways, through the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi, and across the Gulf of Mexico.
It’s one of the worlds great boating adventures.
Those who make the journey are known as Loopers…
It’s on my bucket list to become a Looper.
A few years back I was addicted to a blog by an elderly English gentleman who was making the trip in a small sail boat, which he had bought especially for the job.
His daily updates made for fascinating reading. It sounded like a wonderful adventure. I liked all of it.
…apart from the boat.
It sounded a bit cramped and uncomfortable and generally hard work. Not really for me.
If I was (or more like, when I am!) undertaking a trip like this I’d want to do it in comfort.
I’d want enough room to easily carry all my cruising gear, plus water toys (like sup’s and kayaks), fishing gear, a decent tender for exploring any interesting backwaters, and enough supplies for up to a week away from civilisation.
I’d want lots of outdoor space to enjoy the weather when it’s good. And I’d want a comfortable deck level saloon to relax indoors when it’s not.
I’d want something big enough for my family of 4 to cruise in comfort, but something that’s small enough to be able to easily find a berth in unfamiliar ports.
And I’d want something that I could handle on my own for those legs of the journey when I’m running short handed or even solo.
I’d also want something that’s economical to run and comfortable running around 10 to 15 knots, which after-all is the sort of speed that most of us with time on our hands will cruise at.
In fact I’d want something exactly like this Beneteau Swift Trawler 34.
She ticks all the boxes when it comes to picking a boat for the Great Loop.
Ok, I know the Great Loop is on the wrong side of the Atlantic for cruising with this particular Beneteau ST34, but there’s lots of voyages that you can make in the same spirit on this side of the pond. Whether it’s nosing around the coast of the UK and Ireland, exploring the Baltic Sea or moseying down through the French canals to the Med. There’s no shortage of European adventures to be had in this Swift Trawler 34.
This example is in immaculate condition. With only one owner from new and less than 200hrs on the clock, she is barely run in. She also boasts a fantastic spec including full Raymarine electronics including Radar and Autopilot (at both the lower and upper helms), aft-cockpit camper canvas covers, and both bow and stern thrusters making single handed mooring a doddle.
If you’re in the market for a Trawler style motor yacht, this one is well worth a look.
