Godolphin captures Vase with Mastery for 200th winner of season
Like Mosse, jockey Frankie Dettori positioned Mastery (GB) perfectly behind the leaders and took over turning for home to take the $1,760,855 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Vase (HK-G1) by 2½ lengths to give Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum's Godolphin Racing its 200th winner of the year with its final starter.
A slow pace set by Hong Kong-based Mighty Fine worked out perfectly for Dettori, who always had the four-year-old Sulamani (Ire) colt in striking position and waiting for the right time to pounce. Turning for home, he sent Mastery past the fading Crystal Capella and coasted the rest of the way, covering 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) in 2:27.69.
"[Trainer] Saeed [bin Suroor] told me the horse has been flying the last couple of days, and he was going so well as they came into the straight I knew when I pulled him out that nothing was going to outsprint me from there," Dettori said. "For a four-year-old, he's had very little racing and the fresh legs have definitely helped."
The victory was Mastery's second from four starts this season and only the 13th start of his career in three seasons on the track.
Suroor said the $5-million Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-G1) will be the next probable target for the 2009 Ladbrokes St. Leger (Eng-G1) winner and that he already is considering a return to Hong Kong for next year's race.
Juddmonte homebred Redwood (GB) finished second, a half-length in front of Emirates Melbourne Cup (Aus-G1) winner and 11-10 favorite Americain. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Firestone's three-time Grade 1 winner Winchester, the only U.S.-based runner to compete on the program, finished 11th of 13.
