My heart goes out to the pilot who recently was involved in the crash of this aircraft. RIP

I read some crash reports and can't help but wonder if the barrel roll at low altitude was intentional or a result of some mechanical/engine failure. Nevertheless, my condolences to the pilot's family and friends.

Very good footage. A cameraman that manages to keep the object in the frame at all times. Way to go. The video is so clear you can study the movement of the control surfaces in detail during flight.
@DownhillAllTheWay

My impression was that the cameraman didn't know much about filming a flight. No take-off, no landing, no footage of the gear being retracted or deployed ... Keeping it in frame isn't actually that difficult when it is moving in predictable motion in flight.

Jack Northrop was a visionary. One bit of history: Before his passing, he was shown a B2 bomber. I understand it was a very emotional moment for all concerned. I also understand that the very small radar cross section of the flying wings was noticed even back then.

@@user-ht1nf1ff4y like i said they came in third or fourth as to who was flying the wing first under power was a Frenchman in the twenty's. I believe i seen an article about an Englishmen flying one in the thirties and Jack Northrop was flying his first ones in 1929 and this style in 1942 and then in 1943 the one that is still being flown by the confederate air force in chino calif. Hortens had jets and it only got in the air ounce. Then crached the one we have only got to taxi. In 44 the full sized flying wing bomber was under construction it was flown in two versions first with props second with jets.

Anyone else notice the B-36 Peacemaker type prop noise unique to pusher aircraft? Heard that was caused by uneven airflow past Propellers from above and below wing.

Given the inherent instability problems of this aircraft design I'm shocked that the FAA will even allow it off the ground, let alone jeopardize the lives of spectators at an airshow. Only computerized fly-by-wire technology ultimately made the concept work.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You underestimate what a corrupt Secretary of the Air Force (Stuart Symington) could do, when faced with under-the-table money from a desperate competitor, namely the CEO of Convair. The YB-49 won the Air Force's fly-off against the B-36 and held the US coast-to-coast speed record from California to Washington D.C. Jeopardize spectators lives? Ridiculous.

FiveCentsPlease then why to they call the Horton the first flying wing?
@FiveCentsPlease
6 жыл бұрын
+Lulster 10 "They" are not correct. Flying wings were researched in multiple countries (France, Russia, Germany, US) in the 1920s and 1930s with several designs constructed. Tailless aircraft were considered the next evolution in aircraft design. But the Hortens do deserve credit for their research and contributions, and were the first to fly a wing with jet power.

Flying wings look very similar since they have the same aerodynamic stability problems which have to be resolved by this kind of shape. N9m was made before the ho229 I don't think Northrop and the hortens knew of each other during the war
