Pro tip, remove the spare tire to give you more room to work. You won’t have to jack up the car, and you’ll be able to fill close to the full 1 quart specification. Thank you so much for making this video. Just did this service today after watching many times. I really had to clean out the hex bolts in order to insert the 10mm hex socket. Had to hammer it in as well to make good contact. After that, everything else was smooth sailing. Found A LOT of metal shavings/sludge build up on the drain plug magnet. Glad I did this service. Vehicle runs great!

Great videos Jim. Also watched your other video on replacing the transmission and transfer case oil. Plan to do all three. Thanks for doing them.

I couldn't quite see if the flat part of the crush washer is to be oriented towards the housing or not. Toyota parts department has told me flat side towards the differential housing, but seems folks are split on this on various internet forums. Did you note how yours was oriented?

Shouldn't the vehicle be level (on 4 jackstands) to get correct draining & filling?

Hey, great vid thanks. How often do you change the fluid? Do you tow a lot?

Best to check the owners manual: www.toyota.com/owners/resources/warranty-owners-manuals If you don't tow, you can easily go 75k miles, but if you tow a lot it should be more frequent like 25k miles.

Just a suggestion, not to be a critic but you should always check or replace fluids with the vehicle as close as possible to level or you will get too much or too little fluid in. Either way that’s not what you want, too little is obvious why that’s not good. If the fluid level is a little to a lot high the gear oil could damage the seals on the axles, that’s why the fill plug is at or below the axle. Interesting as well that the 2010 Highlander takes 80w-90 as the 2017 takes I believe it’s 70w-90 or is it 75w-90. I would have some ramps at the front and go with some really good quality jack stands in the back, but my driveway is slightly inclined so I could use that to get closer to level. Great video though.

Is this the same for a 2011 Lexus RX350 AWD? The rear diff only needs one quart of gear oil?

Mine looked thick and metallic at 80k miles. 2010 SE AWD V6. Probably going to do another drain/fill at 100k

Any chance you could tell me where the rear differential breather is located on this car? I believe I need to replace mine as gasket material is starting to push out, difficult to find that info on where the breather is located, Thank you for the video!

Remove the spare tire and you will see and have easy access to breather (at least for my 2005). Right on top of differential.
