Do it! A cheap SSD and some more ram goes a long way. I have 8gb coming in the mail as I decided to keep it as a work machine (mostly Word & Excel). Running High Sierra on it and it's great!

I am at the same stage as you with an old A1181 but don't need to replace the screen. I only ordered a 128GB SSD and some cheap ram. I have the idea to upgrade the resolution of the screen by modding (replacing) the backpanel lid LCD panel with a new 13.3" external 1080p panel that is light and thin. These cost only $65 - $100 and use a 5+v (USB c) low power input. By using a short DP to mini HDMI cable you easily attach that display. It will be messy at first but probably better in the end. I have the same idea with the keyboard. Just mod it (replace) with a better USB version. Ports can be easily used inside the body with some wire soldering. Little neat project for 2021. Last but not least - You can install Windows 10 Pro on these laptops because of the Core 2 DUO CPU and Intel graphics.

That sounds awesome! I have been daily-driving this Macbook since this video on High Sierra. I runs like a champ, but I would love a higher resolution LCD. I think your project sounds like a great idea. I am learning to solder this year and hope to experiment in similar ways in the future!

Make sure with terminal you enable trim on the third party ssd. Also this Mac can run the latest High Sierra

Yeah great point. I definitely need to check trim settings. A buddy of mine brought that up and it's certainly something that needs to be done. I need to do an update video on this machine as it's currently running 8gb of RAM and High Sierra. Great little laptop.

Great discussion .. I am restoring a nice late 2009 white poly MacBook with 4GB RAM and 256GB Crucial SSD .. and I do want to ask, how do you dice the bacon so evenly before frying it? .. I have never been able to cut bacon into those kinds of small pieces, ever .. Cheers

Great q. I would say you want to have it semi frozen at minimum if you are using a duller knife. A sharp knife will slice right through those suckers, frozen or not. Regardless of the size of slice I would say your 2009 is likely going to be a decent little machine with those upgrades!

Hello! I recently got this MacBook for about 100 dollars. so, I want to upgrade it. I've two question: Which SSD compatible with the Mac? And which battery should I bought for this one? I am going to buy a battery from Aliexpress.
@CanadianComputerCollector
3 жыл бұрын
As for battery, definitely look up the model number of the macbook. Most batteries will say "Compatible with 20XX-20XX Macbook." SSDs arent too big a deal. I am more or less using a cheap one in this macbook. It's only 128gb and isn't special at all. I think most of them are compatible.

@CanadianComputerCollector

It sounds like you might have an issue with video. Might want to take it in or simply swap your SSD and RAM into another machine with proven functional video. Also keep in mind these machines aren't perfect, as they are 12 years old, but yours should definitely not restart from those tasks.

I currently have two of these, 2010 models. One has all perfect hardware and just randomly decided to die last week. Wouldn't stop shutting itself down, apple store and my own computer guy of no help. The second machine still works good it's just the trackpad is toast and the screen is very badly faded dark on one half. Is it possible that I can take the good screen and the trackpad from the first one and swap them? And how the hell will I accomplish it without paying someone basically the cost to just buy yet another one of these!
@CanadianComputerCollector

Well as basic as this sounds, I think it is totally doable using tutorials on youtube. That's how I learned everything and I would bet you there is one good machine there if you just combine the two!

is 4gb the max this Laptop can use?
@CanadianComputerCollector
3 жыл бұрын
Actually it is not! 4gb is the 'official listed max', though I discovered the physical max is actually something like 16gb, so I ended up buying 2x 4gb sticks off ebay and it now runs with 8gb! Great little laptop.

This is actually a great comment. I am not a big fan of Catalina because it freezes out 32bit apps, but if you are successfully doing it, that is huge. I want to upgrade to Mojave, but have not as of yet! Still running High Sierra.

And don't forget to use something like an ice cube tray for the screws and LABEL each tray as to where the screws came from!
