I tried this and ran into a snag. On each side of the pan is a bolt with a different head, maybe an inverted Torx? Anyone know what that is? As it is I pumped out and replaced five quarts of fluid, so that ought to make the transmission happier, but I'd really like to get the pan off without resorting to extreme measures like vice grips!

I just had my 2012 Mustang done today and was curious about the procedure. In watching you I hope the mechanic who did mine checked that magnet. I didn't even know that was in there. One other thing I didn't notice in your video is a replacement gasket. The shop where I took my car he said a new gasket came with the filter kit for the transmission. I waited much longer to get my care done, but my car only has a little over 49k. I did it just because the fluid is so old at this point.
@SwanCanFixIt

Yeah the new gasket that came with the kit I purchased for mine was pretty flimsy. I opted to just reuse the original gasket since it had a metal outline and was still in very good condition. Definitely doesn’t hurt to change the fluid more often than not.

dealer charges about $150 for the service. You'll spend how much on fluid, $70? A new filter, the suction pump, maybe a new gasket, pretty soon you're at $100. Then the likely hood of a mess happening, plus not having access to a lift. (You can do the 4 jack stands method, point is to have the vehicle level.). Unless you don't want anyone else servicing your car, I'd recommend taking it to the dealer if you have limited wrenching skills. Now, the dealer charges $375 to change your spark plugs (on a v6), now that is absolute bs and you should definitely do your own work there.

@SwanCanFixIt
2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm it sounds like it may have had a hard 30k miles put on the trans. Might be a good idea to swap the fluid, but could also cause slipping of gears if they are really worn down already. Lucas oil makes a thick transmission fluid that helps with worn trannys. Might help give you a few more years, but that definitely doesn’t sound to good if it’s not engaging at that low of mileage

Mine is about the same and I'll do it right away, never hurts to replace your fluid, it's good for your transmission, more often you do it best it is for it, it lubricates it's components and make it last. When you oil is old it get thicker and lubrication percents less friction and worn your components faster. Same thing with engine oil and piston/cylinder.
