this is why it is called the ironman. not because you are not stumbling or falling. but because you are stumbling, falling and walking on.

I don't understand how some of these people can finish a friggin' IRONMAN and still be pushing over 20 percent body fat! I'm not judging anyone; we all have different body types, but it's both strange and inspiring. I guess, at the end of the day, it really is more about grit and willpower than anything else.

@@Grace-fu6mf Word. So is maintaining general fitness, though, so it's just odd to me that someone who has the mental fortitude to finish an Ironman doesn't [seem] to exercise that same discipline in maintaining a healthy body composition.

strong& well developed cardiac muscles help. have a high/low body fat is less of a indicator of cardiovascular fitness than one might think. it is more indicative of the amount of strength training undertaken.. (and a high amount of musculature isn't always helpful, added stress on heart.. that's why you see very muscular BUT very small elite endurance athletes) .. never the less these people are very inspiring.

Yeah. I guess I wasn't really thinking when I wrote that, as I have read some about that. I remember watching a documentary about a man who swam across the English Channel. He intentionally packed on a bunch of body-fat before the swim and had burned off a significant amount of it by the end. The transformation was visibly noticeable.

That would make sense, as in water, the added weight would probably be a negligible factor, where-as above water it would..out-weigh (no pun intended) the increased energy reservoirs.

We expect to see fit slim people succeed at sports and larger fatter people be not so successful. It is a stereotype and quite fairly so. Sure it is harder to carry around extra weight but you can be fit underneath all that lard.
