i had tears in my eyes as denman and kauto rounded the final turn together. the two greatest chasers i've ever seen (i'm not that old!). no horse tries as hard as denman, and kauto has so much class! really emotional to see the reaction as they arrived together in the enlcosure afterwards. fair play to long run, he looks a tremendous horse and maybe one day will be compared to these two legends! a fantastic race!

I couldn't believe what I was seeing, When they were tackling the hill side by side. Old foes yet friendly stablemates. A site that will live long with Me. My two favourite National Hunt horses ever along with the legendary Dessie. These horses are a one off, I hope there both granted a long and happy retirement soon. They owe nothing to nobody... Incredibly, the Racing Post has put 20 races from the last 20 years of the Cheltenham Festival up to the vote for which is the greatest. And this race is not one of them! So I went back to watch it. I'd say after Arkle/Mill House '64 and Dawn Run '86, this is the greatest steeplechase raced at the festival during modern times.

I'll never ever forget this. Denman/Kauto upsides climbing the hill together, And the young pretender claiming them both. What a race. I really hope Denman isn't forgot in the era of Kauto Star, Both very special horses. Kauto's CV speaks for itself, But Denman in 2008 was imperious in his Gold Cup win unbeaten over fences before his heart problem, Still came second in 3 other Gold Cups and then his second Hennessy win in 2009 defying a rating of 174 and giving a stone upwards all around to...

Denman will never be forgotten. IMO his Gold Cup is my favourite despite me being on kauto that day. Denman was explosive under Sam Thomas destroying a strong Gold Cup field, outclassing them and making them appear to be average.

One of the greatest and most significant races in modern horseracing history. Possibly the two most dominant (and the best) chasers of the 21st Century so far, who had kept numerous great racehorses at bay over the years finally ran out of punch on the final straight and were usurped by a younger model. I remember part of me willing Denman and Kauto to come back at him even though i had a fiver on Long Run. Amazing race.

I'm not that big a fan of hurdle's racing. But I do enjoy watching the Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase every year. This was really a fantastic race indeed. Denman and Kauto Star truly did themselves proud. Really rolling back the years to their glory days at Cheltenham. Also, a fantastic effort by the winner, Long Run, to overtake both of these magnificent champions and win the Gold Cup.

@alexnzxVersion2 i think people dont want to see these great horsees run well below par and then be retired. they would rather see them retired on the back of a brave heroic and respectable performance. great runs from den and kauto at the ripe old of 11. its just ashame than den has lost some of that cruisng speed that in previous years would have saw take the race by the scruff of the neck and get his rivals "at it" with his jumping and galloping.
@riccyq
13 жыл бұрын
@rmvieira It doesn't really give an advantage as the race is over such a long distance, in flat races the distance is much shorter and that would give some horses an advantage. the pace is a lot slower than the shorter races and running over 3+ miles some horses would rather be at the back, out of the way. hope this clears it up for you
@alexnzxVersion2
13 жыл бұрын
I hate the way people are saying Denman and Kauto Star should be retired. Why exactly? If this is the biggest race in the world and Denman finished second, then Denman is the second best horse in the world at the moment. The ground was not fancied for Denman. If there was better ground, Denman would have beaten Long Run for first place.
@Newworldman66
13 жыл бұрын
@alexnzxVersion2 You may have a point, the ground was a bit too lively for Denman, the rain that was forecast never arrived. Softer ground would certainly have improved his chances significantly imo. Sam Thomas gave him a great ride to get Denman as close as he did.

So delighted that Denman and Kauto Star did themselves justice- only beaten by a young talent with a course record when they were both 11. Extraordinary. Full credit to Long Run, brilliant young chaser. I was buzzing when Kauto and Denman had him of the bridle! Superb race and the best 4 finished 1-2-3-4. Marvellous. Kauto and Denman owe us nothing and although it will be sad to see them retire, they fully, full deserve a good rest! :)
