No, the lights are not the determining factor. It is the sensor with automatic headlight activation that measures the natural light outside of the car and if it is getting darker, it switches the dails from white to red / orange automatically.

I completely agree with you, I also prefer the inline 6 above the 4-cylinder. When I want a savers 5-series I would buy a 520d.

There have been some tests though, that revealed that the BMW 530d xDrive is some more economical then this 525d xDrive.

Consumption tests should be done after first oil change,in boyh petrol and diesel cars.

If these tests were done with gearbox in normal drive, the figures would have been even lower; because in "DS" the gearbox is in 6th maybe 7th gear instead of 8.

i don't think so because i watched the 520d video is same story but 530d at same speed return less rpm i think because of smaller engine bmw choose shorter gear ratio

I agree with youm the reason behind this are CO2-regulations here in Europe that force car manufacturers to reduce the CO2-emission of their fleets (on paper). In order to achieve this on paper, they downsize the engine, while these paper figures have almost nothing to do with reality. But that does not matter in a paper bureaucracy, unfortunately.

Amazing mpg figures. But you are comparing to the US gallon, which is smaller. The Imperial gallon figures, 4.546 litres, are; 80km / 50 mph; = 53.6 mpg. 1600 rpm. Probably 7th, as top is approx 38.5 mph/1000, which would take the engine down to uncomfortably low revs of 1300 rpm. 100 km / 62.5 mph; = 51.65 mpg. 1600 rpm. Top gear. 120km / 75 mph; = 44.4 mpg. 1950 rpm. 130km / 81 mph; = 42.4 mpg. 2100 rpm. 150km / 94 mph; = 37.4 mpg. 2450 rpm. 160km / 100 mph; = 35.1 mpg. 2600 rpm. 200km / 125 mph; = 21.86 mpg. 3250 rpm. Once above 3000 rpm, combustion efficiency begins to drop in a diesel. That, & wind resistance rising at the square of the speed, is why the mpg drops more dramatically after 160km / 100 mph. This is why the modern trend in diesels is downsizing, higher low speed torque & greater multiple ratios in the gearbox, to give a better spread of power, keeping the engine in its most efficient rev band of 1500 to 3000, & longer legs during cruising. At 450 Nm, 332 lbs/ft, - this 2.0 litre diesel can produce slightly better peak torque than a 4.2 litre petrol V8, & makes 126 bhp @ 2000 rpm, & 158 bhp @ 2500, which is why diesels are so effortlessly quick, & can pull such substantial gearing. At 218 bhp @ 4000 rpm, it is still producing 388 Nm (286 lbs/ft) or equivalent to the peak torque (& power) of a naturally aspirated 4 litre V8 petrol at the same revs.

Good video as always but I hate the fact that they keep making the ccm³ of engines smaller and smaller with every new car generation (of course not just BMW, pretty much every car brand). Squeezing out every bit of power with turbos and what not instead of making really reliable engines.

I think that europe shouldnt think about CO2-emissions on cars at all as long people in america are driving ridiculously oversized V8 pickups on highways with a speedlimit of 70mph. Not to mention that cars have a rather small impact on the world wide CO2-emissions..most of the CO2 pollution is caused by industry anyways. Thats the reason why I will stick to my older BMW and enjoy the great inline 6 as long as possible.

i have the same in mine 530xd 2008 with remap to 295HP...but up to 160 kph....over 160 i have still the same consumption..never more than 9,3 l/100km..or 170kph or 250 kph ..small motors need more fuel in higer rotation....

I have this type of car and for my driving, it's ok, I have between 5,5 to 6 liters per 100km. I used to have 730d and on a highway it had even better consumption then 525xd. It wasn't efficient in commuting to work, where I had about 8,5l. I think six cylinder is great for highway and since I don't drive much there, this 525xd is great for me.

yup, i totally agree. Europe forces companies to reduce CO2. I think thats just wrong when industry is ruining our world. especially asia and north-america...

They do not force companies, they force the normal people. They industry gets cheap electricity, made out of coal..... Yea, most of the co2 comes from asia and india. But the14 biggest containerships produce the same ammount of co2 from all cars in the world........
