In all honesty, Jeff Gluck said there is a different kind of an enthusiasm when you see how far you are getting and how little gas you are using. He said it's different, but that it is certainly there.

ourworlds atwar I don't know first hand. But I can tell you that there have been cases where the actual numbers were a little lower than what was advertised. (Not much though.) (They often tend to round numbers up in their favor.) But even if you were getting something like 32 city, 36 highway, that's still pretty good. Keep in mind that if the numbers were WAY TOO exaggerated, they would be subjecting themselves to lawsuits. So while they might round things up in their favor, it's unlikely that they would want to stretch the truth too much.

ourworlds atwar The Kia Optima is actually a nice looking car. And 34 mpg isn't bad at all. My only reservation about it is that rear vision isn't so great. But that seems to be a problem with newer cars. The car with the highest mpg I have heard of is the Toyota Prius. (A whopping 50 mpg in COMBINED driving.) But I don't know if you want to spend $28,000. - $33,000.

ourworlds atwar Well, style is all in the eye of the beholder. (Pardon the cliché.) I like the new Hyundai Elantra. Especially if you painted it blue, it would like a small shark. But with gas prices these days, 50 miles per gallon isn't bad at all. That's certainly one great thing about the Toyota Prius. Kia Optima: In one of his reviews, Mat Watson said that his biggest complaint was the small rear window which obviously hampers rear vision.

Currently I prefer the Volt just a bit more than the Tesla in case if I want to do some long distance driving of more than 600km of driving. Tesla is good on ur typical places and the Volt is preferred on long distances...

Very true, I adore the Tesla Model S. However, for the current price of the Tesla, I would have to go with the Volt for this competition.

No. All winter I was only getting about 36 miles in EV mode. Temperatures are now in the low 80's and I got 49 miles EV yesterday. There can not be a memory build up due to the built in buffer that is never used. The battery is never totally depleted.

Two reasons. Premium gas offers more spark, thus more charge to the battery, thus better milleage when in extended drive mode, about 7%. So any loss at the pump is made up at the final mpg. Also, premium gas lasts longer than regular. The Volt has a sealed, steel gas tank that doesn't allow evaporation, or air in to spoil the gas. That is why you can keep gas in the Volt for months at a time.

Then I guess I'll just keep going on gas and forget about charging. The point is being missed. According to the last census, the average American daily commute is less than 40 miles. I think the GM engineers were targeting that number. Even if you commute 80 miles a day, you are getting about 80-90 combined mpg. If you commute less than 40 miles, your charging costs drive the equivalent mpg. at 12.5 cents per kwh, at current gas prices, this comes to 105 mpg. That's a nice number!

Per Tesla: "All automobiles require some level of owner care. For example, combustion vehicles require regular oil changes or the engine will be destroyed. Electric vehicles should be plugged in and charging when not in use for maximum performance." Search "Tesla Motors’ Devastating Design Problem". All manuals for these plug in's, including mine, state that the cars should be plugged in when not in use. Once again, Tesla makes you read and sign a form stating that you understand this.

ps ... I bought the Volt. Tesla technology is nothing new. GM's EV1 was out years ago. The Volt has much more technology than the Tesla. More efficient also. The Ampera won the Monte Carlo Alternative Fuel Rally. Took 4 of top 10. Beat out Tesla. Tesla was champ 2 years running. Beat out the best in alternative fuel division. When the batteries are lighter and a Volt type car can go 150 mi's on a charge + 300 mi's on gas, that will be hard to beat.

Owner's of electric cars don't ever have to buy gas. They are getting unlimited mpg. I can't wait until I can buy a Tesla. The Tesla Model S is more expensive, but better in every way, except range; but thinking people know that's not a real issue. The Volt is definitely cool, but it is made up of many compromises. I don't want to sacrifice comfort, style, speed, or space. That is why I want a Model S. Tesla technology is the future, not Nissan's, Ford's, GM's, or Fisker's for that matter.

Once again. There is no transmission. There is a planatary gear that connects the E motor to the wheels (very simply put). The E motor spins backwards when in reverse. Even in low "gear", the E motor is doing all of the braking. Adding a transmission just for the sake of shifting would probably be impossible, and even if it were, why would you? It would just add to the cost of the car.

By definition the planetary gears is the transmission. Chevrolet's spec sheet calls it a CVT.

Tesla S is a super cool car. That was my dream car until I started studying up on these cars. Turns out, you should plug in every day. You are not supposed to let the battery deplete between charges. In fact, Tesla makes you read and sign a paper concerning charging rules. There is a famous case of a guy who killed his battery by not charging for a long time. Since my daily driving is about 28 mi.'s, the range is not a factor. My dream car is now the Caddy ELR. I'm retired, I like slow.
