To be honest Peter was as good a reason to watch golf as anything else, one of my favourite sports commentators of all time. I could listen to him for hours. I did at the Masters and the Open. Remarkable man..RIP and thanks for the memories.

I remember one of his earliest forays into television in the US - 1980 when David Graham won the US Open at Merrion. I was watching the golf in Gillane's bar on Cricket Avenue in Ardmore and when Peter joined the commentary crew, with all his little asides and anecdotes, the yanks in the bar were all asking: 'Who is this guy'!

I was fortunate enough to get his autograph and share a few words with him at the Millennium Open held at St Andrews in 2000. It was a chance meeting nearby the iconic old clubhouse, definitely one of the highlights of my life! An amazing storyteller, and so knowledgeable about the game, I will always remember Peter and Alex Hay commentating together, especially during the Open Championships. RIP Sir, a true legend, you will be sorely missed.

I listened to Peter broadcasting for well over 30 years, and had the chance to watch him play close up in a Sunday exhibition (with Dai Rees, Neil Coles and Bernard Hunt) at Wenvoe Castle on a wet Welsh afternoon in 1960: magnificent striker, putting a touch iffy. In his development as a broadcaster he took over the mantle of Henry Longhurst and established himself as primus inter pares in those (happily) non politically correct days. Met him once about 20 years ago in front of the main scoreboard at the Hong Kong Open played at Royal Hong Kong GC in Fanling. Hugely courteous, charming and totally without the baggage of modern celebrity. He was already a superstar in the golfing world, and remained so until his passing. He effortlessly bridged golfing eras, and there will never be another like him. This Hall of Fame induction speech is classic Alliss: self-deprecatory, , low key, and very funny. Thanks for posting, it was a pleasure to watch.

One of his best was a comment he made about Bernhard Langer on the BBC, watching him putt with his long putter (new at the time), he said, "I haven't seen a grip like that since they knocked down the old toilets outside Euston station", class

I will always be a fan of The Open and I will always be a fan of Mr. Peter Alliss. I would like to believe I could be as big a fan of one had there not been the other, but in my head I don't know if that is true. Mr. Alliss you were so good and are so, so missed. Though I am enjoying the 149th competition this year, my emotions are jumbled and my heart is heavy with loss. Not unlike Jim Murray, Chick Hearn, Dick Enberg, and Vin Scully, I just thank the Lord I was alive to witness your professional excellence. You were a model of unfiltered observational irreverent brilliance and impeccable timing. Thank you for the years. Godspeed and God bless, Sir.

Chick Hearn and Vin Scully, my two favourites after Alliss, whom I enjoyed listening to in my time in the States. They don't make them like that anymore. Commentators with humour and intelligence, rather than the scripted ones today.

@@keithharris6442 - They sure do not. I was a bat-boy for the California Angels baseball team when Dick Enberg was their play-by-play announcer (& babysitter for Nolan Ryan), and worked with the great Chick Hearn for 9 years during the Los Angeles Laker "Showtime" era. I have been particularly angry, bitter and kind of a prick this morning. Thank you for giving me reason to reflect that I have been one very lucky son-of-a-bitch! God bless.

@showtime951 We all have those days mate, no worries. I feel fortunate to have lived there from 1960-74, went to Dodger stadium and the Forum often. Chick and Vinny made it a privilege to support those two teams. I still follow them today. Was great to see the Lakers finally catch the Celtics after all these years ! All the best to you sir
