No argument from me on that. Coming into the TC though, you had to look at his race record, with race spacing and injury-related breaks and think maybe he wasn't going to make it through that 6 weeks in one piece.

Baffert could have had both Bodemeister and Paynter in the Belmont, and Paynter's unpredictable nice run in the Belmont does not diminish the fact that Bodemeister earned the right to be in the Belmont. And since the race was slow, Bodemeister may have won this race by many lengths (although no one will ever know for sure). I also said that UR has great physical talent, and I congratulate the horse for a courageous win, and hats off to you for naming the winner.

Actually, if you'll remember, if not for the incident of Spectacular Bid stepping on a safety pin or nail, or whatever it was in his paddock the morning of the 1979 Belmont Stakes, and making his hoof very soar, I have no doubt whatsoever we would've had 3 straight Triple Crown winners. I missed out on that discussion before the Derby, but what about IHA did you not like? I respect your opinion on these matters, and I would like to know your thoughts. I liked him a great deal for the Derby -- although you could have made a legit case for about 15 of the horses in the gate that day -- and I was rather stunned at the high odds. Given his performance in the SA Derby, and his smasher in the Lewis, I thought he should have been one of the top 3 or 4 choices in the wagering.

He made a similar move coming out of the final turn at the Kentucky Derby. He changes direction well coming out of the turn, and then seems to have plenty of speed and stamina on reserve for the final stretch; not as speedy as Dullahan or Gemologist on a straight path, nor as well conditioned as Bodemeister to be a frontrunner breaking the headwinds for the pack for over a mile, but fast enough when he needs to be and plenty smart enough this I'll Have Another.

It is absolutely thrilling to see the rivalry between Bodemeister and I'll Have Another. Too bad Bode won't run the Belmont, I say either way they both could have made history. The only horse to have ever placed 2nd in all three triple crown races was Alydar who lost out to none other than Affirmed. Go watch those races, come back and watch the 2012 Derby and Preakness and tell me there's no resemblance.
@Venckman

Yeah, I remember that. I think the ride he got in that race also did him no favors. People make a big deal of the drought since then, as an example of horses being somehow inferior now, but with a slight shift in luck or a bit better riding in some cases, we'd probably have had Triple Crown winners in Point Given, Silver Charm, Afleet Alex, and above all, Real Quiet by now. It's doable, but it's very, very difficult because everything has to come together perfectly. Rightly so.

I wanted all of those TC's too. By the time Affirmed won, it was almost like we came to expect it every few years. I was a fan of Creative Cause also but it does look like he hasn't really improved much over his 2 year old form. IHA and Bode seem to get better every time out. Any thoughts on the odds of Baffert taking Bodemeister to the Belmont? Certainly as a son of Empire Maker he has a right to get the distance, if Smith can get him to ration that speed.

Without looking them all up, off the top of my head, I can think of Spectacular Bid, Sunday Silence, Alysheba, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Smarty Jones, and Big Brown as horses who all sat right where I'll Have Another sits now. As a KY. Derby and Preakness winner hoping to win the Belmont, too. Honestly, I would consider all of those horses superior to I'll Have Another. But that said, this might just finally be the year where IHA's talent level so supersedes the oppositions that he can't lose?

I've heard discussion's recently that more time should be allowed between the 3 races? I strongly disagree. The great horses in the past who've won the TC have managed to make it through that grueling stretch. That's what great horses do, and that's why they won the TC. Lest we forget, Citation actually went to Monmouth and won the Jersey Stakes in between the Preakness and Belmont in 1948. Ran and won an extra stakes race before the Belmont. So don't tell me it can't be done again like it is.

You are assuming the jockey runs Bode the same way he ran him in the Derby and Preakness. If Bode is entered to race in the Belmont, it is most likely the jockey decides to take a different strategy by running Bode slightly behind the frontrunners as a stalker, and then overtaking the frontrunners on the homestretch which is where Bode shines. The Belmont is definitely a race Bode has a high chance to win.
@GBeret83

I clearly and admittedly didn't give this horse the kind of respect he deserves. Because when a horse wins a Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, and Preakness, it's not a fluke. That horse has real ability. That being said, I remain guardedly optimistic before the Belmont. Because there's been great horses where I'll Have Another is right now that couldn't get it done that should've. Spectacular Bid, Sunday Silence, Alysheba, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Smarty Jones, and Big Brown all come to mind.

The crazy thing is, if not for a few inches Bodemeister would be the winner of both the Derby and the Preakness, and his trainer Bob Baffert would be thrilled to be in the Belmont to complete the Triple Crown. Now it seems Baffert is using those few inches as an excuse not be in the Belmont. Baffert is missing the bigger picture and is focused solely on race results. Also, IHA worked just as hard as Bodemeister in those two races yet IHA has not used that as an excuse to miss the Belmont.
@trevorsgrl15

I think he could've definitely won the triple crown. It's not everyday that a horse comes from behind to beat the same horse twice. Not to mention, he didn't come from the forefront of the pack, he came from behind both times. That said, I don't think another horse would want it or deserve it as much as I'll Have Another did. It's too bad he got hurt and had to be scratched. He could've made history. I was really looking forward to seeing that happen. Oh well, maybe next year...
@GBeret83

I have to admit, 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have thought I'll Have Another would find himself in the position he's in right now. But it would great to see him seal the deal. It's been too long since Affirmed won the last Triple Crown in 78', and America's craving another. But I remain guardedly enthusiastic. Because the likes of Spectacular Bid, Sunday Silence, Alysheba, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Smarty Jones, and Big Brown have been right here, too, and couldn't finish the job either. Just saying.

Bodemeister ran another excellent race, and he should be allowed to run in the Belmont Stakes so that he can complete a highly respectable racing legacy regarding the Triple Crown races. It would be very unfair to the horse's legacy not to let him complete the final leg of the Triple Crown since he has ran extremely well so far. Just like Mine That Bird in 2009, Bodemeister should be allowed to complete the Triple Crown journey so that he can make history and leave behind a racing legacy.

It wasn't so much that I disliked IHA, Venckman. I just really didn't consider him, or for lack of a better term, overlooked him beside the likes of Rags, Gemologist, Creative Cause, and Bodemeister. I'm a believer now, for sure. Really hope he wins the Belmont. I'd love to see just one more Triple Crown winner in my lifetime. The biggest worry for me is the jockey. It seems like IHA is cool as a cucumber. But jockey's are notorious for underestimating this track. It has happened to the best and brightest. And this jockey hasn't ridden in a Belmont before. I am not saying to remove him, but he needs clear and precise instructions and riding. To win the Belmont, you need precise riding and precise timing. He also needs to keep IHA together so the horse doesn't fight him for his head, which happens a lot with horses...

And I was floored when I saw him pass Bodemeister in the last few strides before the wire. I hope it happens, I've never seen a horse win the triple crown, but the odds are stacked up, and the other jockey's are going to be gunning for him now knowing this horse can win it all. What makes you say that Bodemeister was "only about 80%" in the Preakness? You do know that he received the best speed figures of his career in the Preakness, right? Add in the fact that he literally had the race all to himself and still got run down in deep stretch? I'm just not sure where the 80% talk is coming from. I'll Have Another did have a dream trip in the Derby, but Bodemeister had an equally as good (if not better) setup in the Preakness. Lone speed on a loose lead...still got caught.
