We went with the Mazda6, years later and 384k miles, it’s been rock solid. Aside from 5k oil changes, and regular maintenance, the only part I’ve had to replace was the radiator, and a $50 cam shaft sensor. My buddy had an optima and it went through 3 engines and he maintains his cars well by 150k

a Couple days ago I was dying to compare cars for myself. First car I test drove was a 2012 Toyota Camry SE and then headed to the Honda dealer (I'm a Honda Civic Owner by the way) tested a 2013 Honda Accord 4 Cylinder CVT transmission. The Accord being $3000 miles more. Well The Camry had way better made interior (Thank you Lexus) I thought I was driving a Lexus...WOW. The panels, Dash, Doors, were very stylish and the materials were solid like a rock. The Car drove like a dream with it's 6 speed Automatic transmission so smooth and for the car only having a 2.5 4 Cyl engine, plenty of power. The car felt safe, tons of open space around you inside the cabin. After test drive I just sat in it and like WOW was so comfortable too! The Honda Accord I drove, cheaper materials inside the car, Very Choppy CVT transmission that was noticeable right away. Before even getting onto the road out of the dealership I knew the Camry so much better it's comical. I was shocked and I'm an 8th Generation Honda Civic owner and lover. In fact I like my 2011 Civic better than the 2013 Accord. True story. Previous generation but latest model way better than this new Honda. The Accord beating the 2012 + Camry LOL hahahaha good joke...That Camry is on a whole other level.

I ended up with a Camry too but sold it after a year, That fake leather dash and doors inserts were just to shiny and glossy and cheap looking and filled with hard plastics. Ended up in a Mazda6 and haven't regretted it. Love the Mazda. A lot of the dash and switch gear reminds me of my BMW 3 series. As for Mazda Reliability, we never had problems with ours, after 6 years we had to replace our transmission on one but only because my dad kept spilling full cups of coffee all over it for 6 years, and had to have the door locks replace after 8 years. That's it. No other problems. We've had four Mazdas and they gave us less problems than our Infinitis, BMWs, Hondas and Chevys. Mazdas are the only cars we've kept longer than 4 years. I liked the Malibu but I don't trust GM anymore. They knew their cars were defective but didn't issue a recall and that led to over 100 people dying. Then to avoid responsibility, they blame pre-bankrupt "Old GM" for covering it up. My moms new Cruze had three separate recalls, I like that car though, felt solid, roomy and nice but three recalls is a bit too much. I just don't trust GM's reliability and I don't trust the company.

Y10Q No. You are quite wrong. Subarus are good for short term reliability. After 100-150k miles, they fall apart(blown head gaskets are common). You are so ignorant and biased. We have many VW's gas and diesel all have been reliable. There is no way you can convince me that they are unreliable. I have had no issues, friends have had no issues, etc. Btw: Fords reliability is worse than VW ever since 2011-2012(not saying they were reliable before). 7 recalls for the 2013 Escape, more for the f150, fire hazards for the 1.6 and 2.0 ecoboost. They're cars are good, quality and reliability is not. We have a new 2.0t, 2.0tdi, 2.5 gas,1.9 Tdi and 2.8 VR6. No issues. The 1.9 Tdi has 300,000 miles and the 2014 2.0t has 10,000 already. I will never buy a Honda or Toyota. Interior quality isn't as good, exterior build quality is almost appalling, driving experience is boring, dated transmissions, dated engines, etc. At least with VW, you get new technologies from Europe.
@violian5

Brandon Friesen I agree with you in many regards. It's the same reason why you don't buy used Honda Integras if you want a reliable used car. Why? Because most people who own Integras own it to race, floor the accelerator when they get a chance, mod the engine w/o knowing the long-term effects, etc. I know this because my siblings have owned a combined 4 Integra that they bought used and all 4 all crap cars. I think this also applies to people owning BMW 3-series - always hear them talking about racing on the weekends, etc.

violian5 Our neighbours had an Acura Integra. It was the worst car I've ever drive and sat in. And I've been in pretty terrible cars. It was a 94 but it felt 100 years older. Top speed was 80mph, the fuel pump worked 50% of the time.I remember back in 2010 they parked on one side of the road, tried to start it, and there was no fuel pump hum therefore, no start. They pushed it a lot! It also had an average of 21mpg with 90% highway. It was the worst car ever made, at least that particular one was. Last year. they crushed it with their tractor.

Today I can buy an SE with 17" alloys, Navigation, ABS, VSC, Traction Control, spoiler, body kit, leather trim, paddle shifter, 6 spd shiftmatic, transmission versus 4 spd, USB input, CD player, Streaming audio, handsfree phone, 10 air bags versus two, and it's $22,000. You all must be buying the wrong cars. A loaf of bread was 79 cents in 1998, today it's $2.49.

I owned a '99 honda accord (transmission, egr, brakes, cat, O2, wheel barrings, suspension). Wife had a '01 honda civic (engine leaking oil, alternator, suspension, bushings). Both made it over 200k. I would consider the reliability to be just average. With that being said, I opted for the 2014 mazda 6 to replace mine. The handling is so much better than any other car I have ever driven, almost addicting to drive around turns. My only complaint is that there is some wind noise from the side mirror at highway speeds and poor rear visibility. Wife got the 2014 Subaru Outback. CVT took some getting used to. Feels much larger and substantial to drive than you would expect looking at it from the exterior. Comfortable spacious interior, excellent visibility. Cant wait to test the AWD in snow. Only complaint is the base climate control and ride quality is just average. Lets be honest, every car has its flaws its a matter of deciding which ones you are willing to put up with.

My previous vehicle was a 2004 mazda 6 that gave me 13 great years and 229,000 miles before finally giving me a costly problem. im1greatman He's actually got a pretty good point. From a price inflation stand point and comparing a car from the 80's or even the 90's. With all the tech and features that come with the cars the price is good. If you don't like these prices on new cars you can get close to the true cost (with inflation involved) similar to those in the 80's and 90's with models closer to the base model (22-25K). Just much better fuel economy. Much safer.I just checked that a base Accord cost 15,000 USD in 1995. That's a little more than 23,000 USD. The price LITERALLY dropped by a little more than a 1,000 for the base model. So no, technically cars have not gotten more expensive. At least from Honda

The Mazda 6 is my favorite out of all of them since it has its own unique look to it, it's sporty, elegant. and has everything inside and outside that I expect in a nice sophisticated Japanese sedan. But I don't get why people only think Kia/Hyundai copy others when Nissan's new Maxima has the Optima look on the side door designs while the Infiniti Q50 has the Accord look on its side door designs. Lincoln MKZs look like Caddy XTSs, the Subaru WRX sports models look like those earliest 90s Galants, sides of older Chrysler 200s looked like Cruzes while Honda makes sides of their Accord and Civic coupes look like coupes from BMW and Mercedes. The newer Passats, Avalons, Fusions, Malibus, Altimas, and the newer Chrysler 200s all have similar side door designs, jacking each others looks.

juan tafoya Absolutely agree. I have a 2014 Accord sport and the 6 was better when I test drove it. I got the Accord because I was able to get a good deal and it was reliable. With the sport's paddle shifting you can also sort of force the car to go into higher RPM which makes it more fun to drive. Also, Evan, whoever told you the Malibu is a good car is seriously misinformed.

Yeah, this was based on looks and sporty feel. Toyota Camry crushes the Mazda in reliability and sales. I have the 2014.5 camry se and I love it. I've had Mazda's in the past and don't have much bad to say but to place a Toyota Camry this low is is a joke!

Mazda6 looks very nice, and I'm sure it drives well. However over time, it won't hold up to the Accord's reliability and quality, and won't retain nearly as much resale value. For those who keep their cars for only a few years at a time, buy the Mazda. For those who want to keep their cars for a very long time without having to deal with major issues, buy the Accord.

I would rather get a unique and rareish car that almost nobody has and looks somewhat different than the other cars. where as the accord looks similar to a BMW, and its made by Honda as in the Honda everyone hates and will never love, unless its a NSX or S2000. AND Mazda is known for their fun and fast cars like the 1st gen Mazda 6, RX-7,RX-8, Mazda 3 MX-5. So the 6 will actually be better to drive. but for resale value, why would u want to resale ur Mazda 6, unless u want a RX-8 or other sports car =D even then if a person had common sense he or she would buy the accord or camry ,cause its cheap, keep it for a while and then sale it

I have to disagree with you. I just upgraded my 2004 Mazda3 for a 2014 Mazda6. My Mazda3 had 220K miles and I have not had any issues with it in the 10 years I had it. When I had a civic, the alternator, CO2 sensors and transmission went out. While Honda has a great track record, I went with Mazda again for a reason.

Most people who stick to Toyota or Honda don't know or care about cars and how they drive. They play safe, based on the old thinking, and buy the brands for one reason, reliability and it's true in most cases. What they don't know is that Toyotas and Hondas are no longer on top and keep paying more (demand) for something they don't get and overlook other brands' better features. This is good because car like Mazda 6 can be bought for cheap (less demand).

I see no reason why the Passat ranks so high. It's tied for ugliest with the Subaru. It gets the second worst mpg. It's one of the more expensive. Let's not forget that VW's are notorious for being difficult to maintain and work on (which is a frequent requirement). Like other German cars, they're great driving when they work, but they often don't work.

Funny that the Passat apparently does not sell very well in NA, wheras in Europe is it one of the best sellers. Also remarkable is that Accord is one of the top sellers in NA and in Europe Honda decided recently not to offer it at all anymore. Hat off to small but innovative company like Mazda for producing such a winner!! You guys in USA and Canada will be happy with the diesel as well (if it eventually ever gets there!)...it's awesome!

How is the Passat a surprise? The current generation Passat in NA was designed specifically for that market. Not only that, but VW is known for making cars that feel upscale but don't cost as much. And as far as style, the Passat is the only one worth looking at. They're all trying too hard to achieve some look (the Hyundai wants to look elegant, the Mazda wants to look sporty and exciting, the Kia and Nissan want to look upscale), but the Passat, like all VWs, has nice lines and a clean, distinctive look. Of course aesthetics are subjective, but in that case they shouldn't have taken them into account in the video anyway. It may have scored low in fuel economy, but get a TDI and you're literally getting record-breaking fuel economy (I'm not kidding, look it up--2013 Guinness World Record for lowest fuel consumption across 48 states for a non-hybrid car). The Passat also won 2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year. So it sounds to me like the only thing the Mazda had on it was adaptive cruise control. I'm more surprised that the Passat _didn't_ come out on top.
@MrGrahamMillward

I owned a Passat from 2007-2013, Great Car! Clean, stylish, lines on the body. Smooth, quiet ride; other than routine maintenance, I had one repair to the line connected to the Turbo for $300. I know Turbos weren't in this competition, but just saying it was a reliable vehicle. My neighbor works on cars all the time, he does concur with the opinions expressed that he hates to work on German vehicles. I haven't driven the Mazda, but Accord and Passat near the top are deserved.

I test drove 4 of these cars and all were good , I retired from Shell Oil and know fuel cost should stabilize for a long time via Shale Fracturing , so I opt to get a V-6 . Competition is really good for consumers . In the end it is preference and feel , financing makes giant difference , Nissan offered 0% APR and I got the 3.5 SV for 24,500 new and I love the car , the small decrease in fuel economy means nothing the power is great and the cvt is extremely quiet .

sporty I'll grant you. I dont really like the exterior styling, outside of he headlights, and the interior is not at all refined. it's funny, the only thing I like about the Mazda, outside of the headlights, is the adaptive cruise control. That is a nice feature in this segment. But otherwise, it's interior design to me is totally unrefined, verging on juvenile. It is monotonous and monochrome, and even with every inch of the interior draped in leather, it still looks like a trim level more fit for a Mazda 3 - it actually reminds me of an generation ago or so Nissan Sentra.
@jtafoya88

For refinement go with the Volkswagen, for the headlights probably Accord. For the total package you just can't beat the Mazda 6, lastly the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 are both on Car & Drivers top 10 best cars and anything on this list is a no brainer for buyers

The 2015 Malibu would have so beaten nearly every vehicle here (especially the Camry, Passat, and possibly even the Accord). You can't argue the fact that the Malibu has the best performance (196HP or 295LB-FT), best safety (10 airbags and OnStar), best technology (MyLink and Safety Package), best real world mileage (we're averaging 25 City and 34 Highway with the 2.0t), and now best quality (from J.D. Power)!

I've test driven a lot of these cars, and the Optima and the Camry both have horrible steering feel, while the Mazda 6 and the Subaru Legacy had the best steering feel as well as handling. The Passat kills all others for rear seat comfort and leg room. You almost feel like (an Arab Shiek who got off his private jet and is being driven by his chaffer in the back seat of an extended wheelbase Rolls Royce) while sitting in the back of a Passat.

Full segment comparo? No American cars could 'make it'? Are they sold out? You couldn't go rent a 200, Fusion, Malibu, Regal or Avenger? Together they sell about 750k a year. The Passat, 6 and Legacy don't even sell 200k combined.

though I appreciate the review I believe the toyota will have the best resale value in the long run. I just bought one last week and after days and days of test driving and research I chose the camry. Easy to resale and had best price out the door. MSRP 32,000 and got it for 26, 000. Also something to note: If you travel to different parts of the world you will notice that taxis are almost always toyotas because there super reliable and have great gas mileage. I would put toyota then honda
