Sand paper with strap wrench. 1 inch strip fit in the special tool. Required some steady pressure, but I was able to remove it. It was a 4 hour oil change. The teeth broke off oil leaked from the side. But that wasn't the end of my problems. I place the O ring in the wrong spot. And when the engine was turned on. The whole dropped out the bottom. The customer was super friendly and patient. I found another filter housing. This one was metal, and with all that experience I just got. I finished the job. The guy paid me. He said. You never gave up, and it was a difficult job.. I never heard from him again. I don't blame him. Scary shit. Hylander 2018 I think .

Absolutely brilliant! Quick lube place put that cap on with so much force. Your method made it so easy to break the seize. Took very little effort to my surprise

I was trying to help my neighbor out and change her oil on her Rav4 and I sheered the tabs off her plastic housing. I used your method along with a half inch ratchet and cheater pipe and finally got it off. Thanks for the video. I bought an aluminum replacement housing at my local oreilly

Self-DRILLING sheet metal screws. Great video. Fortunately, I saw the tab, but still took me an hour to get the thing off. Someone torqued that puppy on BUT good. I ended up putting a 1" PVC about 15" long over my ratchet handle. That broke her loose. I was able to reuse the can. What was ever wrong with the spin-on filters I'll never figure out.

I wish I found your video before handling our plastic housing. What i did,, I hammered the lower half of the housing to a million bits, then vertically chiseled out the inner part that still hugged the main structure carefully, I ripped out the hanging O ring, used pliers and a flat screw driver to pry the cutted piece, lastly I grabbed the remaining half and ripped it off the body. Replaced it with the aluminum house, but sprayed it with WD 40 before hand tightening. That's it. My mom is very happy now. 10 minute job, done. Did I do a good job?

You don't have to bend that retaining clip to take off the oil filter cap. Mine has the same clip and I never touch it and I've changed the oil five times. It just applies a spring tension to assure a loose cap will not back off. Also, the official instructions on the OEM Toyota oil filter box says nothing about bending or removing that metal tab. Torque the oil filter cap to 18 lb.ft. it says right on the part 25 N•m

Are you buying the Motivx brand wrench or at least one that's made with forged aluminum instead of cast aluminum? Also make sure to warm up the engine to operating temperature first. I've seen videos where they had to drill three holes through the wrench and into the oil filter housing cap to get it off. Whoever did the last oil change should be held responsible. Stuff like this is why I have never let anyone but me change my oil since I was 18 (and because I used to do anything to save a buck). 😉😊 You're going to need a new oil filter cap. Personally, I don't think it matters whether you go with a plastic or aluminum one. Either one can break. The plastic is more likely to break but if torque specs are followed then there shouldn't be a problem. I replaced ours on our RAV4 with an OEM plastic one and have changed the oil five times since then with zero problems.

Good stuff! On a serious note, The Corolla of the same vintage has that same filter housing setup. I fought with it at first but then stopped tightening it, I now install it till it bottoms out and back it off a 16th of a turn since the o ring is what does the sealing. When I do that I can take it off by hand every time, if I tighten till it bottoms out it will stick on the engine and I'd make a strap wrench with an old belt and vice grips to remove it. That metal one is sweet, not surprised one exists!
