People stop complaining. This is one of the purest back to basics BMW they made on a long time. People complaining about interiors, go buy an Audi. Plastic? Well buy a hand-made Bentley or Aston. Its the ultimate driving machine, not the ultimate cruiser. If it dances at the command of the driver, and gives the most purest driver experience with little to no electronic BS, its a winner. Take my money !

There seems to be a whole lot of biased people who hate on BMW (because of bias, jealousy, and allegiance to other car brands)who spent an awful lot of time watching a half hour video to nitpick and bitch and shit on a great car, from an iconic car company, that is getting great reviews. I think I know why. The 2-series that beats the snot out of the front wheel drive CLA in every review I have read so far(both the 228i vs the CLA250 and the M235i vs the AWD CLA45AMG). Not to mention how much better it looks than the trendy, busy, and cheap looking CLA(have you actually seen one in person?!). The BMW's styling will withstand the test of time and age a lot better because of it's conservative and purposeful design inside and out. Unlike 99.999% of the people on here, I have actually driven both 2 series models, and I can solidly reaffirm what all the reviews and testimonials from online publications, magazines and friends and associates have said. This is a fantastic car. The handling is great, the steering is precise, the brakes are firm and confidence inspiring, the seating position is perfect, the ride is firm but compliant and it is FAST, relatively speaking. The 4-cyl 228i is faster(0-60 in less than 5 seconds, not even talking about the M235i) in every way than the CLA250 and A3. Speed is subjective and relative, so that doesn't matter as much as how the 2-series makes you feel. It's special. BMW has proven for decades that they have the recipe and know how to actually build engine and automobiles that are universally lauded and sometimes iconic. Would you be surprised from a company of their stature with an actual racing backround, who has built engines that inhabit cars like the Mclaren F1, actual F1 race cars with 1000 plus horsepower, DTM etc? Who else would throw a formula one derived V10 in a sedan, build and actually innovate(something many companies lack today) legendary after legendary M3, M5, and M6 cars from the 80s until today? They are the benchmark. There is a reason why all these copy cat M divisions(which was actually born from humble and actual racing roots) like the Lexus F Sport, Caddy V series/sport, Audi S-line, AMG etc exist. BMW created the market years ago and decade after decade one upped themselves and continued to innovate with absolutely no competition to worry about. These days most of their competitors have stolen the blueprint, come out with phoney performance divisions like Lexus F, Cadillac V, Audi S line, and so forth. All of these companies have benchmarked the BMW as what to measure themselves against, and some of them(Cadillac) just outright steal their whole front and rear suspension and chassis designs by exact standards. Cadillac actually took them apart "to find out what made them so great" then just proceeded to copy it all. It is exactly the same. Exactly. How visionary. Well, that escalated quickly! Sorry for the essay. I have been lucky enough to drive many BMWs and their competitors cars over the years and contrary to the people blinded by favoritism and bias and basement dwelling sock fuckers, BMW has definitely not lost it's way. It's only going to get better as their focus on lightweight technology continues and partnership with SLC who sources their carbon fiber that will trickle down into the 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and M series models(this focus will show up in the upcoming M3/4).

In terms of looks and luxury, Mercedes Benz always and I mean always trumps BMW. Especially now. The CLA looks like it is more than its 29k msrp. But I do agree that BMW has been the standard (save 911) for performance sedans and coupes. I always see it like this: Benz's are luxury cars trying to be sport cars and Bimmers are sports cars trying to be luxury.

Great review, but a small correction, steering ratio comments have gotten muddled up. Less steering angle for a greater degree of turn at lower speeds, for extra agility in tight corners and ease of parking. At higher speeds, the steering rack is slower, therefore, more steering movement is needed for the same angle of steering in the wheels, for a less twitchy steering at higher speeds. Adaptive steering on these is a dream when you compare them to those without

With the interior design, you have to remember this car's the width of a VW GTI, so they're gonna have to make some sacrifices compared to a normal BMW layout that everyone's used to. The only thing that kills me with both this and the 1 series is that upward slope, starting from the back of the side skirt, and finishing in the rear fender. Idk, it just really throws me off with the exterior design for some reason, not sure if other people feel the same way. That and they could do without the tacky blue calipers.
