I bought my '14 Malibu on Sept. 9, 2014. TODAY (2.26.22) is my first time changing my transmission fluid because of your video, simply because I was told on just last year, by the salesman who sold me the car, that the transmission was a closed system. I didn't want to believe it, but somehow I did. This morning, I came across this video, and I was extremely happy and pissed because I've been INCHES away from the transmission fluid entry point and didn't know it. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for sparing me 1) A trip to Chevy's dealership for maintenance, and 2) An embarrassment I would have accumulated, had they saw the black oil I drained. Lol YOU ARE THE 🐐 IN MY BOOK! 🏆

I have the same car it's a closed system as in you can't change the filter without buying a overhaul kit that comes with all new seals the transmission has to be dropped in order to do this really sucks don't know why GM thought that was a good idea at least we can change the fluid tho 😮

I have been trying to figure out the fluid capacity for a while I wanted to be a hundred percent sure I've been calling multiple Chevy service centers no one can tell me anything but today finally a woman asked me for my VIN number and figured it out she said there's no specific level but it could be anywhere from 4.2 to 6.2 quarts if you're only draining it I hope this helps guys

I have changed my Malibu trans oil a few times now. 1st time, I took out about 3.5 quarts. This time, I jacked the car up on its driver's side, and pulled out just shy of 5 quarts. I added 5 quarts of Maxlife Trans fluid with Lubeguard, and it shifts awesomely. I will change it again next year with an oil change. I have used Maxlife/Lubeguard in my ultra crappy Honda Odyssey transmission, and it was a godsend. Honda stock ATF is crap, always had gunk at the magnet. The Maxlife Lubeguard took care of that. I had a catastrophe with the van, but the trans is in another Honda Odyssey working wonderfully! The guy who got the trans just replaced the torque converter, which was smart. Still shifts awesome.

Over fill plug is right behind the driver side tire. On the side of the tranny case. Car has to be level if you use it. I’d recommend it because not all of these transmissions were filled up equally from the factories. So some people are only draining 3 quarts and some are draining 5 or 6 quarts. Some even recommend draining and fill 2 or 3 times in one day or really close intervals after driving so that you get the oil in the torque converter.

All the other videos I’ve seen they just add exactly the amount they’ve taken out. Just measure it it’s no big deal. You should do it the way you’ve done it at 500 and then again at 1000 miles if you’re not gonna drain all the fluid at once. That’s what I’ve seen across-the-board on many videos on KZitem but I’m no expert.

Interesting thing is, per the GM Authority website, "The 6T40/6T45 is filled for life with DEXRON-VI premium fluid, which does not require changing under normal use. It was developed to have a more consistent viscosity profile, a more consistent shift performance in extreme conditions, and less degradation over time. The fluid was validated to improve durability and shift stability over the life of the transmission. " Read more: gmauthority.com/blog/gm/gm-transmissions/mh8/#ixzz5iAbzHoiu

The "life" of the transmission is the extent of the warranty. It never means the entire time the car exists. All transmission fluids must be changed, even if the manufacturer tries to tell you otherwise.

Just take that shit to the dealer and have them flush it for $160 and that will change all the fluid in the trans. The drain and refill doesn't remove all fluid. Also the Dexron turns black fast as does the Ford Mercon version. From what I read it doesn't mean the fluid is bad.

I tried your suggestion at the Ford dealer. Asked them if they were putting Ford specification Mercon V in my Mustang Gt. The service manager say no, they use BG fluids with their BG fluid flush machine. I told them forget that. Be very careful to use the required fluid on these modern transmissions. This is the reason that the OEMs removed dipsticks as people use the wrong fluid type for their application. Valvoline and other brands with their one type fits all is not helping in my opinion.

Specs page says capacity is 7.77 L (approx.) What actually drains when the plug is pulled is dependent on some variables, but I'm not 100% sure I agree with the idea of just replacing what is removed. The procedure is to remove the overfill drain plug at the side of the gearbox, and then fill from the top until it starts to drain out of that overflow hole.
