I would not call the Royal Enfield a toy, but it is not a practical bike for everyday use. It is a bike for having fun on. I have a 2013 B5 Bullet and love it. I will love it even more when I replace the EFI with a carb. The Bullet is just like the old 500cc British singles. Actually that is exactly what it is, even though it is made in India. It is not a retro bike (a new bike styled to look old) it is the real thing. With a decent exhaust on it it makes a beautiful sound, and while it does have a lot of vibration, it is low frequency, not the high frequency buzz of an inline four. It has less vibration than a pre rubber mount 883 Sportster. It has a ton of torque. It feels about half the weight of a Sportster.It handles great in curves. I like to cruise at around 55 mph, and have a self imposed top speed of 60 mph. The vibration level goes up drastically after that. If you've ever wanted an old AJS, Matchless, Norton or BSA single, Velocette, etc, but can't afford the real thing, the RE provides the look, sound and feel for a very reasonable price. If you actually use a bike for transportation, you will want a more modern bike for that. But for a vintage British bike enthusiast, this can't be beat.

It's a great bike for places like india where in cities you can't go above 40kmph. But in most other countries if you can't be comfortable at 100kmph and don't have room to push beyond that, it'll get tedious very soon not to say it isn't possible.

Main reasons a Royal Enfield is not a good everyday bike is because it is not reliable. They break down often, and constantly need to be worked on. Parts are not readily available, and have to be ordered online. They are very poor quality, about on par with Chinese bikes. They have a top speed of about 60 mph. They will go a little faster, but the engine will literally shake itself and the rest of the bike to pieces. They have virtually no frame, the vibrating long stroke engine is a stressed member, and broken frames are common. My rear brake locked up on me without touching it. Fortunately I did not crash, but I am now riding without a rear brake because I never figured out what caused it. (90% of the Enfield's problems seem to come from poor quality (poor quality materials and workmanship) and the rest to bad design. For example, the rear gas tank mounts are literally designed to break off. I have redone some things on my bike, but In ride it strictly for pleasure, at around 55 mph. If you want transportation, get a Japanese bike.

vulcan1753 , interesting. I only got to ride one of these around the block, and I had the impression of low quality and poor design concepts. It felt terrible to ride, too. It was fun but obviously no comparison to a Japanese bike or even my old sportster, which is crude, but man, I didn't know what crude was until I rode the Royal enfield lol

Vulcan, the quality has improved a lot in the last few years, especially with the new UCE engine. I think that the main reason why this bike would not be suitable as a one and only everyday bike in the US and Canada, is because of it's lack of power on freeways where you need to be traveling at about 80 miles per hour most of the time.

I have a 2014 Royal Enfield C5. I bought it a few weeks back and have put around 700 miles on it. So far, so good - I decided to get one because I loved their look when I was off living in India, and I haven't been let down yet. Although I won't pretend to be a bike expert, I feel like the "breaking in" process is making some difference. The vibration has reduced substantially from when I first started riding. I've actually gotten up to around 80mph on the freeway without any difficulty. 70mph and thereabouts isn't hard to maintain, but I think comfort could be an issue on prolonged rides. Definitely no problems zipping around town, commuting to work, and handling traffic, so far as power goes. I can pretty well out-accelerate most cars, at least up until a certain point. Gets a lot of attention on the road, as well. I'm honestly shocked at how many people roll down their windows to ask me questions or have a word or two to say at gas stations. The two big caveats I'll give are this: I learned how to ride motorbikes in India. I'm not used to a lot of power. I also bought this bike because it was what I really wanted, and I knew I'd be thrilled to drive it. It's not a performance monster, but as somebody who hasn't ridden any big, crazy bikes yet, I'm very happy with it so far.

REs are old school bikes, even with fuel injection, which means that some old school tuning will net some decent horsepower to make them move faster. Hotter camshaft, exhaust and a good professional tune up, as well as being properly broken in, will make this old lady move quite well.

I just purchased the 2017 500 Classic late April. With only 265 miles on the bike I have not had it at high speed but once to 60 for about a 1/4 mile. Actually felt pretty good. The vibration lessen with miles. I know the first short trip from my friends lot across to mine, in the snow, the vibs were much. Already they have lessened. Other owner tell me after 1,000 miles the vibs will be less and further lessen with increased miles but not as dramatic a decrease as in the first 1,000. Time will tell for my bike. I knew what I was getting and love the looks of the bike. After 40 years off a motorcycle this was a good choice. I thought about getting a refurbished 441 BSA Victor, my first bike, a good one is $6-7K and you still have a 50 year old bike. This was less with a 2 year warranty and some modern features. Folks in India claim they ride them 70 MPH for significant distances. Some reviewers are shocked by only a low fuel light. Forty years ago you had to open the gas cap at highway speed to see what was remaining.

Vibration fixes! Add weight to the end of the handlebars and change gears to a taller ratio and that will shift the vibration zone up higher and will make it more comfortable at highway speeds.

The vibration you reported makes me think the bike was not run in which takes some 600-1000 miles,. That stiffness would also explain lack of performance. The brakes need bedding in too. The lumpy gear changes are simply down to lack of experience at matching engine speed. These bikes will easily out accelerate any car away from the lights and cruise at 60-70mph; I ride one. Bar end mirror does not wibble about like those antennae.

I hate when people refer to bikes like this as toys. If you knew what Royal Enfields are used for in India you'd know that they're much more than toys and you'd have a whole new level of respect for them. They're simple, honest workhorses that have the advantage of being quite beautiful to look at. They may not be fast or hi-tech, but they're not meant to be.

Dealerships should really run in their demos properly past the break in period which is roughly 1500 to 2000 miles before allowing folks to take them out as it skews the experience. If broken in properly, vibrations are minimal and the bike will happily do 70mph all day long. If buying one, change the chain and sprockets for something a better quality set after break in. I'd also personally paint the engine and buy a matte version for easier upkeep. Having owned the gloss black, paint and finish faltered after several months riding in Irish weather commuting to and from work. Food for thought.
@josephgulino1061

That is the conclusion I have come to also, but 2,000 miles is more than I thought. Dealer hope to sell the demo and 2K may be more than many buyers want, but it could help sell a lot more bikes. The break in is very key on these bikes and reviewers get on new machines and are up to 60 plus. I have a 2017 500 classic. Good to know 2,000K is the mark. Others have said 1,000 miles. 70 mph all day is encouraging. Here in Wyoming USA, intown speeds are 30MPH, 20 around schools. Cities are not like California and other places where I have lives where you pass from one to the other and if not for the welcome sign you would not know it. The 45 miles of nothing between Laramie and Cheyenne is traveled at 75 -80. If 70 is not an issue that may make the trip safer. Big truck travel I-80 at 75-80MPH. Too great of a differential speed mean everyone is passing you. Any recommendation on sprockets and chains? They wear too soon?

I owned a Royal Enfield 500 Classic. I agree with everything you said here. The grips are skinny, hard and hand numbing with very short rides, mirrors almost useless.... I put some aftermarket grips on it, heavier, padded, larger... made a world of difference. You were right.. the gears are very short... I suspect it is because the lack of freeways in India. 50 mph, butter smooth... 60 mph.. miserable. One more gear or a different sprocket would make this a lovable motorbike. As it is, it is fun in town and on the back roads but you have no real ability to get on the freeway, even for 20 mile jaunts point A to point B...it's not an issue of power (I put an aftermarket exhaust system on it, really helped) ..but vibration.

The ammeter indicates start of firing stoke points opening, but the EFI has electronic ignition and no points for that to work off. The EFI has an auto-decompressor. Switch it on, let the pump prime the injector, then give it a gentle prod all the way through. Use the Bi-Starter lever if it is cold otherwise give it some throttle. And it will start. There is a knack to it but no need for gymnastic leaping about. If you're feeling lazy, use the electric welly button.

This common ammeter "trick" was for the older points ignition bikes...my 2008 AVL has transistorized ignition and it no longer applies. the UCE(Unit Construction Engine) bikes have transistor or (CDI)ignitions and NO ammeter. So it really doesn't apply to the UCE bikes.

This review is spot on. It mirrors my experience with it. This is the first motorcycle I owned and it is a great first motorcycle. It is fun and easy to operate, the long stroke single is all about torque and it is very forgiving as to the gear you are in. Mirrors, useless. My hands went numb after 30 minutes of riding, after market grips cured that. I put an aftermarket exhaust on it and it sounds better and has more power. I wish it had taller gears, there is zero vibration at 50mph but 60 is painful and any sustained freeway riding is really fatiguing.

Try this - loosen the front engine mounts, run the motor at idle for a few minutes then tighten the engine mounts. This re-settles the engine into its cradle. Most of the vibration is on that front frame tube. Old british bike dodge. Also check the cylinder head stay. You should be able to cruise a C5 at 65mph in comfort.

HAHA! A very fair and well done review Bryan :-) After emailing about this bike with you I kind of suspected that it might not meet your expectations but even though you have moved it down on your list of possibles, you did an excellent, fair, and honest review. Well done \m/ \m/ I'll add a few things: the single most important part to the kickstart is to just eek the piston past the decompressor (on those bikes it is built into the exhaust valve, on mine I have a compression release) then give a good strong kick. If not it can roll into the compression and kick back (actually hurt you). You can stay on the bike to do it, no need to get off to kick start it. Once you get used to it, it becomes more natural. That vibration above 55 goes away after about 1500 miles. Most of the folks I know that have owned them agree, the bike runs smoother after the first 5-6 months than it does new. Just something to consider, perhaps the owner of the dealership has one he rides regularly with a few more miles on it to compare to. I agree, this bike is not a freeway cruiser, not a 70mph+ bike. It is happiest at 55, can and will do 65 all day, but best wait until it is good and broken in. Great review, looking forward to the Bonnie T-100 B-)

+Arizona RE - the Classic has an auto-decompressor, switch it on, give it a lazy prod. The idea is to spin the motor to about 300rpm not fire on one bang. These bikes each have their own starting ritual. Then there's the electric wellie.
@jeffslade1892
8 жыл бұрын
+Arizona RE - I own one. The Classic (18T) has slightly higher final drive than the Bullet (17T) so once run in will cruise at over 70mph. That may suit a freeway. Unfortunately our motorways' limit of 70mph really means north of 80mph with a lot of traffic but you can sit in with the trucks at 60mph, it is happiest at 65. The sit up and beg position means uncomfortable wind buffeting for anything but a short motorway trip.

not a bad review on the bike but I might as well do a correction - the front wheel is actually 1" larger than the previous model C5 not smaller. this newer model runs 19" front and 18" rear to combat an earlier handling problem issue with C5's with 18" wheels front/rear.how do I know -well in total I have owned 7 new royal enfields in the past 3 years.once you get to know these bikes they are pretty good really. sure they have a few vibs but get better as the miles roll on. once run-in and I mean run in they will cruise easily at the 60 mph mark hour after hour.if you want to check out my latest enfield look at my limited edition despatch battle green 1 -200 worldwide youtube purchased one week ago

+Warro - they also changed the front fork to progressive springs and better damping and which has 10mm less lead so the 19-in wheel gives it more rake, which solves the handling problem at speed from head-shaking to rock solid. I mean you can go hands free and steer with your seat. Just wait till you get her run in :) Swap the exhaust etc for 34bhp :) Enjoy.

This was on my short list too. I never did get to ride one; I bought a Bonneville after taking one out for a jaunt and just looking at the lackluster build quality of the RE. Having watched this I certainly don't regret the decision. The vibration would probably drive me insane and I need it to do highway speeds on occasion. If I lived in an urban setting I'd probably consider it but the Triumph is twice the bike.

***** I don't buy new so its a bit more variable than that, but yes, generally I'd say a Bonnie will be several thousand more no matter new or used. What TWO and I agree on is that the Triumph is "twice the bike". The performance is worlds different and the build quality is very apparent without even getting on them. Fit and finish of my Triumph is a very high standard; the chrome is excellent and the engine parts are nicely machined. The RE chrome is pitting in the dealer showroom, the metal is thin and the whole bike just feels archaic. Now, is that necessarily bad? No. It depends on your expectations. Compared to most modern bikes the RE just isn't as nice. But compared to buying something actually made in 1953 a new RE is a better machine. FOR THE PRICE I think they are decent but simply aren't the same as a Triumph in any category other than appearance.

Dwight Varnes I stumbled upon this video and saw your comment so had to reply. You made a good choice. In India, the Bonneville starts at 5 times the price of an RE Classic so here if one is on a budget the Triumph is out of reach. This is due to import duties, etc as you must know. For the same reason, the RE is expensive in the US. Though a just a bit (OK, maybe quite a bit) cheaper than the Triumph, the quality is far, far inferior as you observed. RE quality is infamous in India and is a cause for a lot of misery even among hardcore RE fans. If I had a choice, I'd go for the Triumph any day. By the way, I rode my dad's 1979 Enfield Bullet 350 for 10 years so you can understand my sentiment.

+TwoWheelObsession Great review sir. This bike is harder to kick over than it looks, and in my opinion harder than it should be for a bike its size with EFI (the dealer actually said it was designed to be given a shot of gas with the throttle in order to "prime" it! Outstanding service and assistance at Velocity Motorcycles of Richmond, Va. by the way...go see 'em!) The handling nuances are spot on, just like you described...brakes that just do the job, light clutch, a little jumpy acceleration but not really fast outright, and beware of that abrupt "skurrch" when downshifting...the gears also felt a little clunky to me on my test bike. I do love the styling and simplicity of it, EFI I'm sure would save the headaches associated with dual carbs. I might get a Royal Enfield when I'm retired and my freeway days are behind me (better that than dropping 30 large on a bagger) but 'til then I'll gladly keep riding my Vulcan! Cheers man.

Sorry if I missed it but have you ridden the Continental GT 535? That bike has a very different character. Better build quality, no high speed stability issue, a lighter crank so it revs quicker and is also smoother and less unrefined. Front brake is excellent and handling is also pretty decent.

I wasn't aware that Royal Enfields were available in the US till just a few days ago. I've been on the fence about buying a bike ever since I moved to Florida. The daily afternoon rain in the summer combined with the large number of inattentive drivers makes me say no, but there's nothing like riding when the weather is good, even if it is riding to work. Is the quality of the Royal Enfield up to par? I've been told by several riders that Triumph and Honda are very high quality so I've been leaning toward them, but I've also had my eye on the Yamaha 400. The kick starter and the styling of that one brings back very fond memories of my first bike, a 1972 Yamaha 250. Do you think the Royal Enfield would make a decent commuter bike? I drive about 10 miles from Brandon into the eastern part of Tampa to go to work. When traffic allows the speed limit is usually around 45 to 55 mph.

+Reuben Hubert Do take the RE if you are willing to roll up your sleeves and fix the bike yourself. The tyres, for example, uses tubes. You need to have a passion for retro riding. Otherwise it is a Honda for you.

+magma80 Thank you. I'm no stranger to tools, but I had a cheap Chinese scooter for a while and keeping it running was more work than fun. I still love the looks of the Royal Enfield. They make me think of the classic bikes of the 30s and 40s.

Thanks for doing this review. I've always loved the way these looked, but don't think I could like with one. Performance is too much like the 125cc two-stroke that I learned on. Around here, everybody drives 70-90. I'll stick with something where I won't get run over.

There is a 'decompression lever' on the left hand of the handlebar that can be moved(towards the rider) to help ease the engine to fire-up when kick-starting...... It is not necessary to put the bike on its centre-stand when kickstarting.et cetera.(No wonder you had issues getting it to start.......)
@jeffslade1892
8 жыл бұрын
+Theban Ned Greenman - it's not a decompressor but a cold start although I think it just opens a secondary throttle position - I run a Dynojet Autotune AT-200 on a Power Commander V and cannot see any enrichment on the AFR from that lever but it does raise the revs. The decompressor is automatic, a centripetal mechanism on the camshaft that cuts in and out at around 350rpm (700rpm on the crankshaft). Which is why if you manage to drop the revs to 700rpm you will hear the decomp cut in and the engine dies - which is annoying because otherwise the motor would pick up.

Tony Tng - Freewheeling a car or bike for any significant distance would fail our british driving tests due to not being in proper control of the vehicle. It is something of a nanny rule but it is considered bad form to freewheel, plus and you get less controllable braking with the clutch pulled in. Engine braking is a good thing. The only time one simultaneously pulls in the clutch and brakes is for an emergency stop. There are occasions such as negotiating a bend where one feathers the rear brake with the power on to make the bike tighten its turn-in.

Enfields are fussy... The 350cc I was riding in December didn't have an electronic start. All you needed was a smooth down stroke on the kick-start lever. Don't kick enfields like a mule. Just a gentle down stroke and it slowly thumped to life. Or, you could spend a LONG time jumping on it and try and kick the bike to the other hemisphere and get nowhere.

I met a guy last year at a bike meet and he had that exact model and in the green color. He let me ride it around the block and I can honestly say it was the worst motorcycle I've ever ridden lol. Very, very slow, terrible brakes, bad clutch, horrible suspension. But, it was fun to try it out. My bike is an '01 XL883 sportster, and also a Suzuki DR650. So that's what I have for comparison.

The bike weighs a little less than 400lbs. that's called "an advantage". After selling my 2008 Honda Gl1800 goldwing; my 2008 U.S. spec 500 avl "military" is my daily dose of therapy(love). No plastic fairings covering the mechanicals or plastic fenders; easy to work on(single cylinder, single carburetor,two pushrod valves).The simplicity makes it "Brilliant" not a toy. Signed: Butt hurt American R.E. owner. Yes shifting by "feel" used to be called "riding a motorcycle" (a necessary skill).These thing as are used as"adventure bikes and have taken trips all over the world.. 50-55mph is the sweet spot and perfect for unhurried country back roads. If you live where those are few and far between it's not the machine for YOU. That's not the bikes fault. The vibration is not that bad; it gives it a character modern motorcycles have lost. My Goldwing would drone on (dead) smoothly hundreds of miles in a day painlessly, noiselessly,(numb) and I have more fun per mile on the enfield. I can do a short loop of 50 miles on the R.E. feel like I've ridden a "motorcycle"; nota sewing machine, come back satisfied for the day.
