Same issue yesterday on 2015 5.0. It stranded me and 88 year old mother in law. Was fine on the way to her house 8 miles; turned off to walk her to truck. Didn’t want to start. Started on second try. AC wasn’t working right (90 degrees outside). Started watching temperature gauges nothing showing on coolant gauge, transmission temperature was fine. Didn’t make it home. Now I am worried about mother in-law seating in the heat and of course my broken down truck. I waited for ten minutes between attempts to crank truck and drive the approximately 1 mile to my house. It would not crank. I found this video after family picked up mother in law. I saw where clear codes to operate correctly. I happen to have something to clear the codes with. It was like a miracle. Everything was operating like perfectly. Today I changed the sensor. Without this video I would have been screwed. Thank you so so much! I had 2 iPhones; FaceTimed myself to get a good view of the sensor. Your video put me on it but seeing it while working it was good for me.

Had this exact alert and problem happen on my 2016 5.0 158,000 miles this week. Alert showed on dash, Temp gauge went to 0, CEL on, and Trans temp showed normal like you mentioned. Before I saw your video I dropped my truck by a local non-dealer shop. They did a disposable block test and told me that test showed coolant present in the cylinders and exhaust present in the coolant system. They say bad head gasket. Recommended engine replacement. I did have them clear the CEL for me, I paid for 30 mins of labor and brought my truck home “ran perfect coming home a few miles”. Oil looks perfect, no smoke, no sweet smell exhaust. Coolant reservoir shows about 1/2 inch low below the Max fill line. I picked up this sensor at Ford this morning for $28; going to throw it on and see what happens.

I have an older 2007 expedition with the cylinder shut off cool down feature. When I first got the vehicle on warmer days and in reverse the cylinder shut off would engage and I thought it was a reverse problem and then it started doing it while slow rolling after driving and I thought the vehicle was breaking down from being old and then I learned about the cool down feature. Ok, I give up after 2.5hrs of frustration, how does the clip for the wires come apart? I’ve tried a little screwdriver and can’t seem to get the clip to release. Wish there was enough room to have filmed that part. The way this presented for my daughter on her 2016 F150 5.0 is pretty much as described, she got about 3 miles from the house, the temp gauge pegged at max, over temp warning message popped up, and the engine started shaking and barely ran. She shut it down and called dad. I pulled it home, pulled the therm and tested it on the stove, working perfectly. Went searching on good ol utube and found this vid. Thanks for posting, really helped us out in figuring out what was happening. Now about that clip…

Similar situation for myself on my 2017 3.5 ecoboost. 3 years ago radiator & new water pump. 6 months ago hauling a load with ac on truck overheated and blew coolant out the relief. Shop replaced the tstat. Was good over the winter but then about a week ago when I hauled again with cruise on ac running air temps around 55 and it progressively warms up quickly and throws the overheat. However no check engine lights. Pulled over and turned ac off and temps went back to normal fairly quick. Finished my remaining 10 minute drive. Fished the day and went to drive back home. Got 20 minutes down the road and it did it again. Still no check engine. Any recommendations on quick things to check before I bring it back in? I got a warranty so they can fix it up but just curious if you have anything I can tell them in advance

So that's the only sensor for it? A scanguage for example wouldn't give you a different reading through the obd

I cannot understand the benefit of this type of sensor. Why not an actual probe in the coolant? To try and avoid a potential leak? My Mustang GT has some engine data readout on the cluster, and “cylinder head temperature” is one of them. Guess they weren’t kidding. I have no idea how you’d ever get to this sensor in the Mustang chassis

Would the sensor be in the same location on a 2016 f150 with the 3.5 naturally aspirated Duratec?

Jeeze, Gotta Dismantle the Passenger side of the Truck to change a sensor that's litterally buried. Engineers??? If they had to work on these units they'd think twice about some of these things. So much for the K I S S method.

Not all parts of a vehicle are easy to get to. That is the same for all brands and models of vehicles (and trucks). From an engineering point of view, this sensor has to pick up cylinder head temperature in a spot where it accurately reflects the engine temp (far enough away from coolant temp). In this case that position is not easy to access, though it is not impossibly difficult. I have had issues where engineers have placed/designed certain components. But most times they do a reasonable job. So give them a bit of slack. I am sure some things you have designed have given people grief. But I am sure you had your reasons. I’m having the same problem, doesn’t throw a engine code and coolant bubbles once it gets hot. Wait 2 minutes and it’s fine. Coolant level stays full trans temp stays normal any suggestions

It has to be professionally diagnosed

Did you ever figure this out. Mine is doing the same thing. Engine does seem to get hot but trans temp remains good

I am having the same problem with my 2011 ford explorer. Ford puts these sensors in the worst places. I've changed the sensor twice. The first time it worked for like 2 to 3 weeks and then it started acting crazy again. I just changed it again and its still acting crazy. P1299. Do i need to get the sensor from ford? First one was from advanced auto then napa. This is driving me insane! Some please help!

I have not had that problem with the Ford Explorers so I don't know how to help you on this one
