Honestly I would just keep the same auxiliary set up that you have created. I’m a master diesel technician and almost every time I see a diesel truck with the metal or aluminum auxiliary tanks in the rear they are contaminated (9x out 10).and they are in my shop with a fuel related concern. Those after market auxiliary tanks do nothing but destroy fuel system. You may also might look into running a fuel filter/water separator for that auxiliary tank, to clean that fuel before it makes it to the main tank. I would also be checking that auxiliary tank for water contamination as much as you can. fuel systems are $$$$. I think what you are doing is a great alternative just giving you a heads up on the issues I see in the field!

As this project is a fuel tank Safety is a #1 priority whenever you start, build, and what finished product will be, when the project is complete in the end. First of all let me address your bunghole location for everyone. It wasn’t a bad location, but a little high. Depending in your level of skill and how clean that tank was w a area should have been cut out and a new plate added to the tank to give a downward angle and be more in line with the centerline of the bottom curve of the tank. This way you would get the tanks fullest capacity of fuel. Where you placed your bunghole, you will always have at least 3-5 gallons of unused gas in the tank. That’s a lot of wasted fuel and money always sitting around. Not to mention because gasoline attracts water your likely hood of getting water in the fuel is exponentially higher too! But if you did have the welding skills or could not find a shop willing to do the task. Then you location is as good as could get Now for those that say or thought the bunghole should be in the bottom of the tank, that is completely inaccurate. The reason is that if you ever were to place the ora fuse there it would suck up all the debris and gunk that collects at the bottom of the tank. Of course which will kill or slow destroy your engine. Next, is the acrylic top. Unless that is 100% UV A&B protected and also chemical resistant it is a horrible choice of material. As it if is not it will, be in short order destroyed by the gas and sunlight. I haven’t started on the heat and pressure factors. I see that since you a just plating the hole where the old fuel pump used to be, your going with a gravity fed system. That’s fine. That also explains the larger size fuel line, but because you are not using a fuel pump and you sealed off its location. I didn’t see you install a fuel tank pressure relief valve on the tank. Without it the tank will over pressure due to its location to constant direct sunlight and heat exposure. Keep in mind you/he used a an old existing tank which is actually not double walled. Meaning in laymen’s terms insulated and reinforced, both of which are required for use with and external gas fuel tanks. Also, you don’t have any proper mounting of the tank to the bed and rubber grommets and or bushings around the fuel lines going through the bed and body. You also don’t have any sort of protection for the tank separating the tank from the bed. So, basically you are driving around a giant gas bomb.😂😂 Other than that, not a bad job.

You missed the part that this is diesel so no bomb, acrylic is from my wife’s co2 laser sign business so it high Uv resistance acrylic, the pass through hole I used 1/4 steel core edging, I ordered steel straps for thank but didn’t have them when I was prototyping this setup, I plan to put a 3/4 NC solenoid valve so that I can disconnect the tank as I haul debris from my rental properties from time to time and want full bed access, and this fuel tank came with vent on the tank already. 🫶🏻

I would like to say, If you have a diesel, this is perfectly fine, but this is a no no with gasoline vehicles, certain states have laws preventing this, and since gasoline is considered a more dangerous fuel for containment, please don’t do this unless you know your laws and what you’re doing

Are you sure your setup is legal to drive on a public highway? A 50 gallon plastic tank of gasoline sitting in the bed of a pickup held in place with a one inch ratchet strap doesn't appear to be real sanitary in the event of an accident or from shifting cargo.

Does it feed into your OEM gas tank? If so, do you even use your gas cap anymore since it would flood out of that if you tried to open it while filling the top tank?

To clarify this is diesel truck. This setup would not work on a gas vehicle without a control valve use to fill the main tank when empty (the evap system would get back filled with gasoline and create some problems.

i plan to add a 2nd tank with an electric pump i can turn on which will fill the main tank up, after the main tank is empty to my 76 Jeep j10 aka gladiator with 8ft bed. There is so much room under it with the spare tire gone down there, and it came stock with a 18 gal tank with a 360 v8 lol... that gets like 11mpg.. so i gatta refill after like 130 miles it sucks lol You need a rubber grommet to that hole with the fuel line though eeventually it will rub that rubber on the metal body thats sharp from your hole your drilled and it will cut that line. Im not a fan of where you put that tank though, now your truck is even more useless first with its 4-5 foot bed, and now the bed full with a tank in the back... I would have put a smaller say 13-15 gal tank underneeth

Would love to do this on our Chevy 2500. Unfortunately, it’s a gas truck and while people do put aux tanks, it’s a little sketchy to me to just “diy”. You also need a transfer pump to be legal, not gravity fed so more complicated. There’s a kit for the 4Runner, honestly looking at that also for ours. With the way new diesel trucks are it’s just not worth getting, with the price difference and the emissions control issues.
@thestateofreal2533

I believe based off CFR 49.393…you could do it with gasoline legally just as you are allowed with diesel as long as you use a NC solenoid valve or use a fuel pump as the transfer pump to the main tank. They just want you to have a way to prevent the fuel from just draining out in an accident.

@@thestateofreal2533 I believe you’re correct, really hasn’t become a “problem” or annoying enough. Truck is used as a daily for short 5 mile commute most days. That’s why the diesel would be a problem, never would do a proper re-gen and dpf would clog. But for 10-15 weekends it’s towing a 24’ enclosed trailer and the 36gal tank and 9 mpg makes lose long trips a little annoying.
