The bittersweet closure of CSX's former Clinchfield route through Erwin, TN has resulted in the loss of 300 jobs. For the former L&N route through Corbin, KY though, it has resulted in a much-need infusion of traffic. In its heyday, the KD Subdivision easily hosted 30-40 trains in a 24 hour period; most of them coal. Over the years, it has died down to about 10-12 trains in a 24 hour period and very little coal. However, the closure of the Clinchfield route has resulted in the majority of it through traffic coming to Corbin. The result is an additional 5-10 trains a day, which makes things quite busy for this single-track railroad.
With fall colors finally reappearing, we took the opportunity to document the third day of operations on the KD Sub that includes the increased traffic. The result was 11 trains captured on camera and 4 more operated in daylight that we did not catch. Spectacular views of "the gorge" near Jellico are featured along with a variety of new and old motive power. Enjoy!
