The Sand Mandala Project is inspired by the Tibetan tradition of sand mandala creation. “Mandala” is a Sanskrit word meaning circle, although it refers not so much to the geometric shape as the concept of wholeness, completion.
For 10 years while teaching World Religions at a Catholic high school, I led students through a process of designing, creating, and destroying a sand mandala at the end of the Buddhism unit. The project involves the design process, creating the mandala, and finally releasing or destroying the art play. While the finished mandala is a beautiful art piece that can become a focus for meditation and a reflection of the group that constructed it, the process of creating the mandala is itself a meditation. Despite the beauty of the work of art, we always destroyed the mandala, releasing the sand to the land as an acknowledgement of the impermanence of all things, a fundamental element of Buddhist philosophy.
It was one of our favorite and most impactful activities.
