Because the engines were that large!! Bigger the propeller, faster you went was the common theory of the day

Why are the props on some of the World War II planes so large ?

My understanding is that, because air is not fractal, the aerodynamics of a scale model do not scale down perfectly. Larger props and greater dihedral therefore improve performance for a scale model..

The props that suit the engine of the suitable power for an r/c model are far smaller than that of the scale size. Model engines spin at anything from 7,000 up to 16,000 RPM whereas the fullsize engine spun at less than 3,000 RPM. The scale size prop, for most scale models, is far too big to be suitable for the engines fitted.
