I bought a 2017 VW GTI S 6spd manual for $23k out the door, brand new with 4 miles on it. Golf R's at the same time, brand new were $41k. That's an $18k difference guys! And for what? AWD, and a couple other things? That's an insane jump for the R. Since I've bought my GTI, I've put $11k into it. That includes coil-over, wheels/tires, EQT turbo (IS38 hybrid) tuned by Frank Mabo, Stage 2 clutch, brakes, and so many other goodies (some performance, some sound system, some aesthetics). If someone went my route, they could easily only be around $7k into the car with the power and suspension mods that I have. Lets say somebody did do that. That puts them in the $30k range for their GTI, that's waaaay faster, and can handle waaaay better than a stock Golf R, and the GTI owner is saving around $10k still!! Yes, the Golf R owner could also do the same mods, but then they are into the car at $50k+, which gives the GTI an even better price to car savings ratio compared to the R. Like $20k in savings!! Spend another $20k on the GTI, and it would be mental!! I don't know about you, but for the price of a bone stock R, it just ain't worth it. Yes, it will come out of corners better with the AWD, but hell, with that $20k savings on the GTI, you could put in AWD on it, and still be way cheaper. Part of the reason why the R is the price it is is because of its name, and I get that, but between these two cars, the best route to go is the base S model GTI. That's if you plan on building it. If you plan on keeping it stock, the Autobahn GTI is the best bang for your buck.

The reason why the DSG is "confused" when you downshift when you're coasting is because the DSG is only that fast because the next gear is already engaged. However, the gearbox has to predict which the next gear is gonna be. If you're just coasting along, the gearbox thinks you're not using any power, so you will surely shift up soon. When you shift down instead, it first has to engage the next lower gear before it can shift. This is normal and happens on all DCTs. The only difference will be how the car predicts the next gear.
@lightbulbisbright
9 жыл бұрын
Not completely certain about your explanation. From my understanding, as the dual clutch has two clutches, there is a clutch for the even gears and the other clutch for the odd gear. Therefore, if I was coasting along in gear 4, both 3 and 5 would be 'primed' by the second clutch. I'm probably wrong about this though.

Sarin Murlidar When you are accelerating in let us say, 2nd gear, 3rd is already selected but 3rd's clutch is disengaged. Pull the paddle to upshift, and the clutches just swap. The even clutch disengages, the odd clutch engages. When braking in 2nd, the gearbox selects first. Press the downshift paddle and the odd and even clutch swap. The dual clutch gearboxes are fast since all you are doing is engaging one clutch, and disengaging the other.

TheSmokingTire My brothers Scirocco seems to handle this pretty well. I assume it's the same transmission. When you start driving it might be somewhat confused but as soon as you have a little bit of distance behind you it seems to know it pretty well. What I've found is that it's much more accurate if you're shifting on brake pressure though. I don't know how everything is programmed but I can only assume that the car assumes you'll shift down when breaking.
@Benedocta

Sarin Murlidar Watch the "Engineering Explained" Video on this. Only one gear is preselected. TheSmokingTire PDK works exactly the same way though. Maybe the "bad guess" shifting is faster and feels better some way and/or the prediction algorithm works better or aligns better with your driving style. It still works the same way and can only preselect one gear.

I test drove a fully loaded 4 door with DSG, leather and nav and everything and I did not like the way the car steered, it felt less engaging and it was less fun to drive than the basic model. A fully loaded GTI is wrong to me, a hot hatch should be simple! So I bought a two door manual with the 18 inch wheels. To my surprise they came wrapped in super sticky pirelli tires right from the dealership. I drive the car like a total hooligan and the tires don't squeal like the car you tested. I put on the sport mode and select the sport setting of the esc which allows just the right amount of slip. In tight corners, the back of the car rotates under heavy steering input, its great fun.

I respect the R a lot, but $10K is $10K (and it's often more at different dealers). You could get a GTI, spend half of that delta on mods, and still have a bunch of money left over. The entire point of the GTI is to be a (relatively) cheap and cheerful pocket rocket. For what you spend on an R, you're entering off-lease M3 territory, which is a completely different level of car. The stock tires are also crap, get onto some performance rubber as soon as you can. This one upgrade really opens up the chassis envelope of the car, especially given that the GTI is the lighter car.

In the current market a brand new 18’ GTI can be found at around 20-23k.. and a used Golf R with 30+k miles on it will be tough to find for under 30k. That’s a 7-10k difference. Although that may not seem like a lot to the reviewer, $7-10k is a shit ton when you’re shopping for cars in the 20-30k range. Ofc the Golf R is better, I wish this guy reviewed the car for what it is- and not as a golf r competitor.

Golf R is Definitely a Wolf in sheep's clothing once you add a stage 1 tune. One thing to consider when comparing a standard GTI to a Golf R is that Golf R's still bring M.S.R.P.. Due to the VW emissions scandal you can buy a GTI for close to $4-4,500 off sticker price. That basically puts the base GTI with DSG and PP at 28,000 OTD here in CA where as the Golf R with the DSG is $41,690 OTD. That puts the price difference closer to $13,690.

I got my mk6 gti because they were available in 3door vs the R (Canadian problems) but I saved probably 10 grand over getting a used R. The way I see it, is even if I were to use that 10 grand for performance mods to the gti, it still wont be AWD, so it will always be restricted. But thats not to say the gti isnt a good time.

a mk5 or mk6 stock brake will not tolerate 12miles of sporty driving down the hill. Brake pedal will get longer and longer and you start to smell the brake at the end.... The sports package in the MK7 seems to fix this somewhat

As a 2015 STI owner, i wish he took the 2015 STI around this road instead of the wide open road to test the mediocre power of the subaru. the powerplant hasnt changed for the STI but the handling has been dramatically improved. It's changed enough that it can beat the cla amg and m355i around the the Streets of Willow. I'm sure if Matt took the STI around this nice tight curvy road, he would be a little bit more impressed.

I'm trying to decide between getting a 2015 Sti or a 2015 GT. from your experience, is the Sti a good daily? Is the power/ throttle response fun, or do you feel that you can easily use all the power?

i test drove a 2015 GT lately and a boss 302 before the STI. the STI with snow tires will go anywhere during the winter or blizzard. the power is enough around town but when youre on an empty stretch of highway, its easy to use all of it. i had a 350z before this and this STI is my first turbo car and its pretty addicting haha

@farhan007

DGRWPF Why? Because 600 dollars added on to a 28,000 dollar new GTI will get you 300+ hp. You act like it's expensive to tune the car. 600 dollar flash will make this a 300+ hp car. How many sub 30 grand cars have 300+ hp? And FWD is not mutually exclusive to performance driving especially with the lsd and great summer tires this thing with a stage 1 tune would still be faster than a 40+ grand 335i.

***** A stage 1 tune refers to a remapping of the ecu which is the computer inside modern cars that controls things such as boost pressure in turbocharged cars. Almost all turbocharged vehicles are significantly easy to increase horsepower because all that needs to be done is increasing the boost pressure from the turbocharger in the vehicle. APR which does only VAG vehicles(Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche) is a highly reputable company that makes the software to do these ecu tunes and they tend to be highly reliable. Subaru owners use a different company, primarily Kobb I believe. You are going to have to look up what generation your 99 subaru is if it supports an edu tune. Again stage 1 usually refers to just a software tune with zero hardware modifications.

While Latigo is a great road, it's not what I'd consider the best one to showcase the GTI's strong suits. As Matt said, it's primarily a 2nd/3rd gear canyon, but the GTI is at its best on faster 3rd/4th gear roads- like the one he tested the Golf R on. Malibu canyon is full of tight twisty roads that are a lot of fun, but the faster roads are where the GTI shines....

They underrated the crap out of these things. Stock they're making almost identical power figures as the Focus ST on the dyno. With a downpipe and a tune (Stage 2) they're making 310whp or so, so they even see good top end gains compared to most stock turbo cars. Great power to weight at 2970lbs for the base car. Seen them outrun 5.0s on the highway Stage 2. As you said even a stock car on just a tune they're making 280-290whp. Focus ST doesn't have that same top end gain with stock turbo, as stage 3 the FoST is around 265whp. Not to mention they're about as heavy as the R. Curious, how do you compare a base GTI to a basically fully loaded Fiesta ST? Given they're about the same price. TheSmokingTire

For $6,000 less than the Civic Type R ($6,800 without the tune), you can tune the GTI and crank out way higher numbers. Easily 10+ more hp and 50+ Tq over the stock Civic Type R. That is just with a stage 1 tune, nothing else. I have a good hunch, the Type R only beat the GTI on the nuremberg track because of the additional power. If you plan to Stage 2 or 3 the GTI, you're better off saving your money and going with AWD.

David Rivera I can't possibly learn anything about reliability in a week with a brand new car. But if you're buying this VW GTI, you are getting a warranty for 5 years / 60k on the drivetrain and 3 years / 36,000 on everything else. When I do one takes with people's older cars, I ask them about the reliability, but with these new cars there is no way to know unless you go to something like consumer reports.

David Rivera had a bmw 135i N55 and it spun a bearing at 55Kmiles and i'm ocd about maintenance. Luckily i purchased extended full coverage warranty and they replace the engine. IMO knowing the common faults with certain manufacturer's model, for example the bmw 135i i had that had vcg, water pump, ignition coil, hpfp, oil housing gasket, charge pipe problems....somewhere along the road (i say under 80Kmile there is a 100% certainity you would have to change it.) However the car was the best to drive when i changed over to kw suspension. As i rem 2.0 had dv problems and some other leaks but that was early on

David Rivera 09 GTi here, already had the intake manifold replaced under warranty. And out of pocket I have had to replace all of the coil packs, water pump & thermostat, and will be replacing the timing chain tensioner soon before it grenades the engine like they have been known to do before 80k miles, and it currently has an intermitent misfire. Then recently took it to the dealer to have something diagnosed and was hit with a $4k estimate for things that needed to be done. Car has all of 65k miles on it. At the moment I plan on doing a few of the things that absolutely need to be done like the timing chain tensioner, and then next year it's getting traded for something else. First German car I have owned, hasn't left me with a good impression.

David Rivera My wife put 85K on her 2008 GTI with what I would call "no problems" - was traded earlier this year for something else. Counting that car, collectively we have owned 5 VW's since 1995 (and an Audi, so 6?) and all were relatively trouble free other than the Audi, which had one major issue covered under warranty. All cars were maintained 100 percent by VW/Audi well within their recommended service intervals. Though I had the 80K service on the GTI done last year at an independent VW mechanic. I don't know of any personal acquaintances with VW's that have had any major problems at all with their cars. But, they are like me and keep them maintained. FWIW and full disclosure, none were kept more than 90K miles.

Matt, what frame rate are you filming these at? The last couple of One Takes and this one have playback that looks like it's running at 29.95 fps when it should be 23.95 for smooth and true playback if that is what you filmed it at. Either your timeline isn't matched up to the footage when editing or you're exporting them at a higher frame rate than they should be but it looks wonky, you'll want to fix it for future videos, especially since it wasn't an issue in the past. Cheers.

Something tells me that the GTI would have a slight advantage uphill because of its smaller/peppier turbo, and full torque at 1,500rpm. Doesn't the R's IS38 require a bit more spooling? I think that could cause an issue in some situations.
