Put a couple of bird baths around and the birds may leave your figs alone, they are after water. I did that and they leave my figs alone.

Desset King Fig does great for me in Point Loma / OB, San Diego, 2 blocks from the ocean. I've grown it since 1992.

Speaking of my discovered Desert King. I have a fig tree about 12 years old where I never knew its name and I don't remember if I bought it at Lowes or Home Depot, according to the fruit, it is green and when it ripens it turns yellow, almost everyone has a big eye, honey comes out of the eye and the color inside is light honey. According to a very knowledgeable person in my area, it was Karota and I stayed with that idea, in the end, after drastic mistakes by the experts, last year I pruned it so and I had almost no harvest like the previous year that until I made jam and frozen quite a few bags (the birds ate a lot). The figs that he gives me are many mule, triple twins, but they are BREBAS, the figs that are born on young branches fall or never ripen. I live in Surprise, Az 9b, and I am already seeing the brebas since January 5 grow. The branches that grew last year are full of baby breba, a minimum branch foot has between 10 to 12. I put a graft last year I don't remember if it was Marsellie Black or Violeta Sepor and she had her first fig but it didn't ripen well and it was purple, but right now it is also like with 6 baby girls in half a foot too. It makes me very interesting that he is also pushing brebas in the graft. The fruit has a honey flavor, but I have seen that some DK show them with a red, pink, even dark red interior, I do not know if the climate produces these color changes and the earth. In my tree I have harvested up to more than 200 figs. It definitely needs the wasp to pollinate but seriously, it's fine like this, it gives me a lot of brebas.

Thanks Ben B.! Yeah from the photos I've seen DK seems to be more green in the PNW with more red in the interior. But it's been over 100 degrees here the last few days. Maybe if you guys had weather consistently that hot the DK figs would look more like they do down here?

The nutrients in the soil can effect the color of fruit, more iron darkens plants. Or other nutritional deficiencies can keep fruit from darkening too.

Thats interesting you mention that. i know a lot of people around here use ironite if a tree looks too yellow. maybe my trees would benefit from something like that? would that be considered organic?

+MrFrozenJoe The only fertilizer I use, for everything, is Milorganite. Some friends at work introduced it to me. Just keep in mind that with Figs, too much fertilizer will equate to lots of lush growth at the expense of fig production. www.milorganite.com/gardening/vegetables-and-fruit

Do you get main crops in AZ??
@MrFrozenJoe

The main crop figs drop before ripening. I believe that the main crop figs on DK require pollination by the fig wasp in order to ripen. On my DK trees just a handful of main crop figs hang on every year and are edible, but not very good.

Dessert King, has both a big breba crop, and a big August crop on current year branch growth. Dessert King has two main crops, breba. 'Desert King' is a mistaken spelling which went standard spelling.
