Being a Volt owner for almost 5 years, I appreciate a review that hits the nail on the head. You can not believe how many people I have encountered that believe the Volt and the Prius are the same type of car. I show them my odometer. I reset the trip every 5 K miles. 10 gallons per. I tell them, "try that in a Prius". My E bill went up just under $25 a month but my gasoline bill went down more than $90.

Great review! You nailed it about range anxiety... arriving at a non-functional public charger. In an EV, it's PANIC TIME, but in the Volt, it's just an inconvenience. Something else you should mention is the inevitable loss of battery power in cold weather, especially when the heater is necessary. Again, with the Volt this is a non-issue; you'll just be using more gas. In a pure EV it can be the end of your trip.

I'm very excited about this car, due to this splendid review. Currently, I drive the amazing Opel Ampera (Volt 2012-2015 model) and still happy. Greetings from Amsterdam!

The engine will NOT send power to the drive wheels when "powering up a mountain grade or you've got the powertrain in sport mode and you're trying to pass someone". Mountain mode is used PRIOR to encountering a mountain. It will run the engine a bit harder (assuming you've depleted the battery and are running on gas) to charge the battery (to about 20%) so it can send additional power to the electric motors to help the engine drive the car up the mountain when you get to the mountain since the 101HP engine alone will have a hard time moving the car's 3,650 pounds (plus passengers and cargo) up a steep grade. Sport mode only increases throttle response and will only operate when the car is running on battery power alone. The ONLY time the engine will send power directly to the wheels is when running on gas and under very specific circumstances that the computer determines and the driver cannot. It's done under moderate load demands and it's done to optimize the efficiency of power delivery and maximize fuel economy. Nothing more. I'm a 2017 Volt owner (13 months and 17K miles) and not just a reviewer. I know my car very well. It takes more than a day or two of testing to fully understand and explain how a complicated and unique car like this works and what the engineering means.

I would've thought the NFC icon on the charging station made it clear that you were supposed to use your phone to pay for it, but I suppose it might not have been as ubiquitous in 2016.

Sport mode does not "calibrate the power train to give you extra energy" it just changes the throttle pedal response such that the same pressure on the pedal corresponds to higher acceleration command.

A good review of a great vehicle. My Volt is the most enjoyable vehicle I've ever driven. Regenerative braking is awesome, the electric range and mileage are better than advertised.

Great Review . . . As a driver of a mid-sized CUV, I've been looking at a small CUV but dreaming of a hybrid or, especially, a plug-in hybrid. I've been looking at 2nd gen Chevy Volt videos and I'm really wondering if this isn't my best bet for a next vehicle. New isn't always best, and if the batteries are holding up nicely than this may be a good rig for my needs.

He made a good point at the end of that video where he comes up to a DEAD charging station. With our infrastructure crumbling the way it is, driving an all-electric car beyond the range of your own home recharging station really is taking a huge chance since many of the charging stations are not being maintained and are non-functional. I don't call that 'Range Anxiety', I call that 'CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE Anxiety'

Put the volt in mountain mode when you exhaust the battery.. It will charge to 40% capacity...or approximately 20 more miles...you must stop turn off car and restart to show added miles... I utilize this little known feature all the time..

Can you buy a solar panel and charge that way
@Raven10241
8 жыл бұрын
so why hasn't the car gotten a solar roof option added you see people having to make mods to their vehicle to do it as is
@rkalla
8 жыл бұрын
Solar is still relatively inefficient - a panel big enough to charge battery would be huge. Something the size of that roof is just enough for accessories like how the Prius would run vent fans to keep internal car temp down while parked. To charge battery with roof panel would be like a week of leaving the car parked, just soaking up full sun.

Riyad Kalla so if I am driving the ev to and from work it would almost work for keeping the battery full atleast during the summer funny how idiots like you think it would never work under any cercumstance
@rkalla
8 жыл бұрын
I certainly appreciate your passion for wanting this to work, but solar still isn't efficient enough to make it work - you can answer your own question by looking up charging capacities from roof-mounted units - it's popular in RV culture to power minor accessories or keeping the battery charged/cycled for long periods of time (weeks/months). Ok, logic and reason aside, fire away with passion and insults. That fixes most things! :)

Flat road driving at 70MPH requires around 10KW. A roof-mounted solar panel might be around 1 square meter. With the sun directly overhead you can get around 200W going into the panel. Panels are around 40% efficient on a good day. Charging isn't 100% efficient. So you might get around 80W going into the battery at high noon from a roof solar panel. Lets say you can charge at that rate for 3 hours. That would get you 240W-hrs. Therefore, you could drive the car at 70MPH for 1.44 minutes. 3 hours of sun for 1 minute 26 seconds of driving. Yay. Not worth the weight or effort.

In the future quick charging will happen far faster then filling a tak with gas. Teslas can quick charge in 10-15 min, in 5 years that will be cut in half and so. The gas engines days are numbered!
