With the Pilot seemingly moving upscale, where does that leave the MDX? Similar story with the TLX and Accord. An Accord is just as nice and so much cheaper. Is Honda purposely cannibalizing their own luxury brand?

I wish you could test the base LX or the EX trim, these will be the volume seller for the Pilots. As usual, the Touring and Touring Elite will languish on the dealer's lot because they are and always will be priced where someone with the financing will look at the MDX's, RX's, and Cayennes instead.

Honda's are this nice Acura's are that nicer than Honda's. Actually, the only bad thing about the Acura TLX is the German made transmission on the V6. So it is rather ambiguous what kind of criteria you are using on your remark.

cadsux Consumer reports has been so questionable lately. They've ranked Subaru's high on their list and yet JD powers has Honda still in the top 5 for dependability and Subaru is pretty low. The one consistent brand has been Lexus achieving number 1 both with JD powers and CR. Regardless, Honda and Toyota are consistently within the top 10, usually top 5 year after year. www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2015-vehicle-dependability-study
@cadsux

JD Powers also indicates that Honda is more reliable than Acura (#5 and #13 respectively). Isn't that what I said? Is that questionable too? JD Powers surveys about 30000 to 40000 car owners per year. Consumer Reports surveys over 1.1 million car owners per year, and they also conduct their own tests by buying and "living with" the cars in question. Other auto journalists simply "date" their cars instead of "marrying" them. JD Powers was established in 1968, but wasn't an auto industry standard until 1987. Consumer Reports was established in 1936. Both organizations disclaim that consumers should also consider other resources before buying.

Great review. We've been looking at the pilots for a while. The thing I liked most about the second gen pilot is that its exterior design wasn't a clone of other Honda models. This one's design looks just like a crv, accord, etc. Nothing wrong with an suv looking like a truck (referring back to the second gen), if people want something to look like a car, then buy a car. First world society has become a bunch of whiners. Its performance and interior looks invigorating though. Keep the reviews coming, sir.

The Pilot's interior is in many ways, better than the MDX. It's got the panoramic sunroof, MUCH better infotainment system, and interior leather quality. At 11:54, Sofyan says that Honda made this car feel like an Acura- in fact, he nearly called it an Acura! This is REALLY bad....Honda's vehicles are getting more and more refined and luxurious, while Acura seems to be at a standstill. The refinement and interior luxuriousness of all Acuras on sale today are not even close to that of competing Mercedes and BMWs. THAT BEING SAID...I am incredibly hopeful for Acura's future, given what I've seen with the 2019 RDX prototype at the Detroit Autoshow earlier this year. My fingers are crossed that the production 2019 RDX being presented at the New York Auto Show tomorrow will be nearly unchanged from the prototype. If the 2019 RDX's design language and interior quality carries over to the rest of Acura's lineup, whilst keeping the traditionally competitive pricing Acuras have been known for, I can see some true hope for the brand :) *By the way, for those of you that might say I'm an Acura hater - I am QUITE the opposite. I have been ardent fan of Acura since I was a kid. Just visit my KZitem Channel!! As a 22 year old, I want my first car out of college to be a used Acura TL, from the 2004-2008 generation, which in my opinion, was the best generation for an Acura 4 door sedan (the TSX of that era was amazing too!). A few years ago, I had faith and pride in Acura vehicles, and defended them against most of my friends who loved BMWs (we had friendly debates! 😂). But today, I think most hardcore Acura fans (like me!) will agree that the current "modern" Acuras have definitely lost their edge. But, I also hope that we can all still keep hope in Acura, because it appears as of now, they are slowly pulling themselves out of this hole :)

I't great that the handling has improved, but if you are concerned about the strength and long term durability of your car, especially one that is supposedly able to go off road. Take a look online at the Pilots suspension since 2003, and then the 2016 models. 03 had large steel lower front control arms, then in 09 they went to aluminum, but were still close to the size of the steel arms. For 2016 Honda drastically reduced the size, amount of metal used, as well as changing the control arms design. I've studied suspension for 30yrs, and read a metallurgical report, stating that when aluminum is used for suspension control arms, the amount of aluminum and/or bracing should be increased to equal the strength of steel, also aluminum fatigues faster. But it appears Honda, and many other car and truck makers for that matter, are more focused on lighter weight and handling, at the expense of strength and long term durability.

If I'm going to pay close to 50k I'll be looking at a q7 or q5. Nobody is dropping almost 50k on a Honda simply because of resale value. At 37k the ex-l is the best bang for the buck in the 2016 pilot models.

When you speak confidently about the design of a product, it necessarily doesnt mean that the design is actually nice, as a honda customer and also having the 2014 pilot in my garage, id say this design is not very impressive, a leap perhaps from the old pilot, but atleast that stood out among other vehicles. This new one does boast many features but the design is a blatant rip-off of many pother vehicles.. i dont understand why ? If a brand like KIA can innovate and conquer markets just by Design, Honda has the machine, people and experience to step it up in the design game...

personally i think honda dropped the ball really bad with this one but everyone has different taste. the interior is absolutely awful and they screwed up all that absolutely perfect storage layout the previous model had. i just leased a 2015 pilot in january and it's my favorite vehicle i've ever had. i was kinda excited to see the new model when they told me i'd probably hear from them about halfway through the lease to trade in for a new one since the used car market is so big currently. unless they gave it to me for free, i'd never consider it for any reason. they did a nice job with the engine upgrades on the new one but that's it. i really like the unique look of the previous generation. the interior layout is honestly at least 10x better. it has many features that make it luxurious but it's not filled with unnecessary garbage. the exterior design on this caters to soccer moms and that is absolutely it. the first generation is honestly one of the ugliest suvs ever made but imo they did such a great job with the last model. honda lost a future 40k from me, that's for sure. when my lease is up, i'm going to just buy out the one i have and keep it for a few extra years then likely get a jeep. it made me so sad to see this new one. the old dual exhaust was so nice also. not even the 2014 lexus rx350 my mom has that costs tons more has a nice looking exhaust. then they go and hide it giving it that minivan profile from the rear. there just isn't anything at all i find appealing about the new pilot. it's borderline hideous inside and out.

I own the 2016 Pilot Touring and it is mostly a good car but is has several significant issues that detract from it. I disagree with the reviewers comments about the 9-speed and being smooth. The 9-speed has smoothness and surge issues and mine is supposedly not affected by the TSB that allegedly fixes such issues. Its not exactly bad, but it's not good either. It is worse than just about any other car I have driven. It makes the car quite twitchy to drive. The infotainment system is horrible. The subwoofer does not work properly, the sound is lacking and the touch screen, as the reviewer mentioned is lacking from physical buttons. I would not buy another Honda with such a system. It is also slow to operate and the bluetooth is not ver good either as it can only handle one phone at a time and can't switch between two (unless you are prepared to wait a minuted). The FM receiver/antenna set up is defective on the vehicle. FM sound fades in an out as you drive. I have had a TSB done on mine that supposedly fixes this and it did nothing. It is a design fault, and Honda has not yet got this right. The auto/start stop is intrusive and impacts drivability out of t-junctions. It also cuts of a/c when the engine switches off. Yes you can switch it off but it has to be done every time you start the car. There is no option in the system set up to set a time delay before it switches off or deactivate it permanently. I have not be able to find anyway to switch the car off but leave it in accessory mode. Seriously Honda? You have to switch the car off and then press the start button to put it into accessory mode. This cause a huge delay in the infotainment system to restart and anything you were playing typically gets forgotten and starts from the beginning again. What a crappy system. I now hate push start systems (at least Honda's) and wish for a normal key ignition.. Call me a retro grouch. My wife and I hoped to keep the car for 10 years but in six months of ownership it has annoyed us so much with these niggles that the many good points are over shadowed. We will be selling the car and replacing it long before 10 years is gone. Shame :(

I can understand people's frustration with a lot of these SUVs/crossovers looking the same but you can't blame the car companies. They are designing cars that will sell. The boxy SUVs are going out of style because people want crossovers for family vehicles rather than mini vans. Just look at the Pathfinder, Explorer, and now the Pilot. They are all changing these former SUV to "mommy SUVs" aka crossovers

While a great design, I think it looks too much like the Acura MDX it shares its platform with... the Touring Elite model will most likely push $50,000 with all the options, which is close to the MDX, so I think the top-of-the-line models should have a bit of a lower price, as most people looking to spend that kind of money on an SUV will go directly for the MDX... it also needs to have a bit of a lower starting MSRP to compete with the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento (7-Passenger). The 9-speed auto transmission is a nice option, though I'd like to see a turbo four-cylinder engine and a Hybrid model to compete with some of its competitors that offer those options. All in all though, a nice SUV, and if I were shopping for a midsized SUV right now, I'd consider the Pilot! (:

Looks more like a minivan at first look. I don't like the front facia. I dont like the push button gear selector or not having a volume knob.

They sure put a growl in the revs. Wonder how much of it is real vs artificial.

The navigation system can be dangerous. It will not permit the PASSENGER to enter an address while the vehicle is in motion. This requires additional, and unnecessary maneuvering on the part of the driver to get the vehicle stopped and then back underway again. Voice command does exist, however it is unreliable. You would be better off to get the vehicle without the built-in navigation and buy a separate navigation system that will allow the passenger to enter an address while in motion.

Um... This is safe so if there isn't a PASSENGER the driver isn't paying attention to putting in a address. Lexus does this as well.

Any chance of you reviewing the 2019 Honda Pilot since they made software updates to the 9 -speed transmission? I would like to see if you notice any real change to the shifts after there have been so many complaints regarding the 9-speed. And not to forget - they brought back the volume knob!!

No doubt it will be another amazingly reliable vehicle but..... it's a Ford from the front, Audi Q7 from the back. No unique look.

@Redline Reviews Greetings from Boston, MA. Is Honda going to address the FM radio issue that all the new Pilot owners are reporting? They are reporting a lot of static and fading in all the FM channels. Also, the Idle-Stop function that is too slow and annoying to be of any use. Will Honda provide a firmware update to permanently disable the Idle-Stop function? Thank You.
