I have a mid 70s Acrolite aluminum 14x5 and every time I play out with it people complement the sound of that snare. As soon as you hit the aluminum Yamaha I thought, that's the one for me. Great review Rob!

I thought I would be all about that brass one, but that 7 inch steel one was speaking to me, big time. The consistent mid-range blast is amazing. I can't really explain it, it just seems like it's got more bandwidth than the rest

All of Yamaha pro drum gear since Maple Custom, the tension rod inserts have a nylon bushing to keep it from backing out quickly (it still backs out). That's that "security" feeling you're getting when tuning the snare drums. Nice video!

Hi Rob, thanks a lot for this comparison, well done! I don't prefer steel snares in general and as soon as you switched to the aluminium model in this video, I re-confirmed this to myself. I am a big fan of your videos/channel and always look forward to new stuff that you put out. Keep on grooving man, all the best to you!

Love your videos and efforts in making them. Thank you, Rob. I have a Ludwig Supraphonic (402) 6.5x14 and I LOVE it. I like all three of these you are showing and I've been researching them for a while. Your video may have pushed me to the brass. This is a tough decision but all of these drums sound fantastic.

Nice video. I laughed out loud at your donut analogy. The funny thing is, the plain, unglazed old-fashioned donuts are my wife’s favorites. Does this mean that I should buy her a steel snare? To be clear, she doesn’t play the drums.

I would like to make a suggestion and some questions. Your room sounds petty dead, ever think about putting in some quadratic diffusors in the room to give your recordings a more natural sound quality? Just a suggestion. Also, why are you putting acoustic foam in the corners? And what is the room dimensions? LxWxH? Just curious.

Oh God, they all sound Good! I'm an Aluminum Fan all the way, after owning a Ludwig Acrolite. My most favorite 8 lug snare. But I need the Stainless Steel in my Collection, since the Aluminium has Woody qualities. I presently own a Yamaha 80's era Brass Piccolo, and a matching Live Oak snare. So the Steel would complete my diversities.

Hey Joel, I just picked up a 3.5x14 brass yamaha pic yesterday, are you able to tune yours very high? Id love to here a side by side comparison with the 5.5x14 brass rc
@Hoprgras
7 жыл бұрын
It would get high, but not very high. Mine is not in its original configuration. I lent my snare out to friend years ago (2009), and he wanted to run it very high. So he tuned it so tight, he snapped/broke a couple of tuning rods out of the lugs. Leaving them unable to tune. My message to him, "if you wanted a higher note, you needed a "13 or "12 shallow snare! Mines a "14!" I was upset, but held my composure. So it sat under my bed for a year wondering if i should trash the whole thing. The brass plates that hold the lugs, all bent, and dented. So eventually I bought some 1" shallow lugs from "Jamming Sams" website, and resurrected it.

Thanks for the input, that will prevent be from doing the same mistake. I just put a UV1 coated single ply batter and Genera clear resonant on the snare side and am fighting a long ringing sustain...Thanks again for responding to my reply.
@Hoprgras
7 жыл бұрын
Denise Robins I've got a Remo Coated X14 Batter, and a Remo Black Suede snare/reso, plus a Puresound Pro 24 strand snare wires. And the Ole Brass Pic has a sound to die for. It even has a wide tuning range. Lower tuning make it sound like it's 5 1/2" deep instead of the actual 3 1/2". One strip of Gaff Tape keeps the overtones down, with just a tad of ring. It's a beautiful thing! Running a thicker batter will help on the ringing.
@deniserobins2439
7 жыл бұрын
I realized my mistake!, the genera resonant was made for a tom not a snare, put my old stock thin resonate back on and wow! nice and warm snare, cut the perimeter of the old genera dry for damping, sweet! The only complaint now is that the bottom hoop won't tune up as much where the snare wires go through, weak spot in the hoop I guess... oh well, what to do??? sounds like you had yours dialed in real nice!
