I Had all my drive fluids changed during my first oil change, the oil change was free because I bought the car at that dealership, but the trans and rear diff was only like 200 bucks to do em, including labor and fluid. since then I have done all the fluid changes myself, today is 12/12/2021 and my 2018 1.5 AWD has 92,011 on it and I finally did the filter behind the heater element and I was honestly expecting it to be destroyed, but it wasn't, it was definitely VERY VERY VERY dirty, but I really think doing my break in fluid changes helped out a ton. The writer and the tech that was there when I picked the car up for my first one said that if more people did that break in fluid change at about 5,000 and then keep up on your fluid changes it would solve a ton of un needed work. 100 bucks in fluid and washers vs $4000+ for a trans replacement....its a no brainer.

Its a good video. There is a transmission filter under the battery tray. It is rarely addressed. Very little information about it. That transmission had a lot of metal. I think I would change it. Maybe get more life out of this transmission. Personally i love the fact Honda put that overflow hole there. Cannot overfill, and you know it has correct amount of fluid. Simple and easy for diy. Also wish more bolt heads were like the drain plug. You dont have to find the correct socket and you can apply a lot of force without slipping.

Great tuturial video! The only thing that's missing is letting the viewers know that after doing a drain and fill you should plan on doing another one in another few weeks only because there's no way to get all the fluid out in one drain. I would say come back a week or two after the initial drain and drain and fill one more time before you decide to not worry about it for another 40k miles.
@JonnyDIY

Thanks, glad to help. Yes, you most certainly could do that. I would recommend doing that especially if had lots of hard driven miles (towing) or overdue 👍

I have almost a million miles on Honda auto transmissions in the past 20 years. I just did a drain and fill every 30K to 50K miles. No need for back to back drain and fills, in my experience. Replacing 3 to 4 quarts every 30K to 50K miles is sufficient maintenance to keep the transmission fluid in good condition. I never had a transmission failure and some of my transmissions had 350K miles when I traded them in.

I put 4 liters HCF-2 in my 17 CRV AWD, ran through the gears and then opened the port and slowly added the fifth slowly. None leaked out. I didn't have a 6th liter of HCF-2 so I closed the port and left it a few hours until I got another 2 liters. Then I opened the port again and had a steady stream for 4 minutes. It's running fine but I'm not sure if the short wait is best or the long wait
@JonnyDIY
4 жыл бұрын
Well you should only fill the AWD with about 4.5 quarts so in Liters that would be about 4.3

Hey, Johnny DIY. Thanks for your videos. I change my CR-V oil by jacking up only the front left and installing a jack stand. This would also give me access to changing the transmission fluid. QUESTION: What do you think about changing my transmission fluid by 1) jacking up the front left, 2) draining the transmission fluid and reinstalling the drain bolt, 3) refilling the transmission fluid, 4) removing the transmission level check bolt, 5) lowering the front left so the car is level allowing any excess fluid to drain out, 6) again raising the front left and reinstalling the level check bolt. This seems easier than jacking up all four wheels trying to level out the car. Thanks!!!
@JonnyDIY

You could do that. Would probably be easier to do the replace amount that drained method I showed and forget about the check bolt though. As long as you end up draining close to the specs I mentioned for refills it's good and you'll know it wasn't low or anything 👍

I emptied the fluid out of my FWD CR-V and over four quarts came out. I only had four quarts, so I put them all in. I guess that I'll see how it goes.

That's fine as long as it's close I have heard lots of varying amounts within probably a 1/2 of a quart 👍

@@JonnyDIY That's good to know. I'll add that I didn't level the car, but instead jacked it from the driver's side. I figured that if I was going to replace the exact amount that came out, then I should get out as much as possible. Without a doubt, more came out than would have if it was drained when it was level. The next time I do it I will level the car and fill it until fluid comes out whatever that hole is called.

@@bretak74 ohh that makes sense. Yeah and I guess dealers, the factories or whoever did final inspection on these things added varying amounts of fluid. Probably checking and topping off. All close to the specs I listed though

My 2015 CRV with the 2.4 liter(same as your in video) doesn’t have a cover to remove to access transmission or oil drain bolts. I also never have had to use ramps or jacks to access the drain bolts. Easy to slide on my back in the garage and change these fluids.

Ohh mann you're lucky. After the re design in 2017 its a tight squeeze for me to get under there with ramps and creeper. And I'm thin. That must be nice not to have to break out the ramps 👍🏻

Jonny DIY I see you have the 2.4 engine like mine. At about 60k miles I decided to start doing my own oil changes instead of the local shop. They had been using Valvoline 0W/20 Synthetic. I decided that I would use Mobil 1 same weight. Well after about 6000 miles or so my wife started noticing the oil light coming on when she either stopped or took off. I told her to stop the car and I went to her. The dipstick was dry! I had not been checking the oil thinking it was a fairly new car. But, the engine is direct injection and apparently burns more Mobil 1 than Valvoline. I switched back to Valvoline and started keeping a check. It may use a 1/2 quart or so between 5k mike oil changes now. I have 92k miles now.

I recommend the 4.5 quarts. You also can do the check bolt method and just fill until starts to drip out a little bit (with vehicle level). And you're welcome, happy to help 👍
