I realize this video was posted 5 years ago but I wanted to leave a positive comment. I just changed the fuel filter on my 2017 GMC Duramax and the video was extremely helpful. Instructions are accurate and easy to follow. One recommendation I'll add for others doing this job: After replacing the filter element, take care not to over-tighten the drain screw and filter housing. They are made of plastic and the threads are easily stripped if too much force is applied. Over-tightening also makes the housing difficult to remove for the next filter change. I recommend using a torque wrench if you have one, the specs are stamped on the housing.

I definitely recommend going out and getting a 36mm or 1-7/16 socket with short extension for this job. I managed to get mine off with a combination of crescent wrench, channel locks and filter wrench but it was quite a pain and almost rounded the nut. Didn’t see the install going too well without the socket. The cartridge itself doesn’t seem to thread as smooth as you’d think for a lower torque plastic housing.

Agree with others - love the no non-sense video! Nice job I am about to do this for the first time on my LP5. On my previous Ford diesel, you had to loosen the filter a specific number of turns (4??) to basically close off the fuel line before removing the water drain plug. If you didn't it drained a lot more fuel. Do you know if that is the same on the LP5? Also, your video shows a 1 7/16 socket. Is the nut actually standard or is it metric and the standard just fits OK? If I have to buy a new socket, I might as well get the right one. Edit: 36mm for the cap nut and 18mm for the water drain plug. I broke loose the water drain plug and then loosened the cap until it was finger tight. Then removed the drain plug. Seemed like a good plan, but it looks like it drained the same amount of fuel as seen in the video. At the best, I didn't get any fuel on me that way.
@MasterJacks

Thanks for posting this. The procedure does call for a preliminary draining of the fuel bowl. I don't know that it's necessary other than keeping yourself dry as you mentioned. Thanks for posting the correct socket sizes.

Read a bunch of the previous comments .... couldn't agree more. Well done. But having just done mt 2015 with 39,000 miles and I still had 30% filter life remaining, it seems later models require more frequent filter changes, any thoughts?
@MasterJacks

Thank you! I guess I can't say with certainty, but hearing my little brother talk (he works as an engineer designing diesel engines), fuel disparity and deterioration play a big part in component failure and therefore emissions compliance. Everything is high pressure common rail direct injection with incredible tolerance standards. Water and ethanol (a light acid) are very corrosive to the fuel system. I imagine manufactures are trying to preserve component life and emissions compliance by shortening service intervals in the most common culprit. 🤷♂️

@@maxkarl4192 My '03, '07, '11, and '15 all had their filters changed when I changed my oil. You could feel the difference in throttle response and power with a fresh filter. They changed the filter location when they brought the L5P out. Mine has 17,500 and 5% left. I'm going out to the barn to change it now, but I haven't felt any difference in power or throttle response with the older filter.

@MasterJacks
5 жыл бұрын
No direct experience on the issue, but if replacing the fuel filter doesn't solve the problem, it could be the WIF (water in fuel) sensor. Reading forums, it sounds like a common problem. I believe it is located above the spare tire on the L5P and runs around $30.

If I remember right, the filter housing has 25+5 Nm (18ft lbs + 4 ft lbs) written on it. It's plastic with a big o-ring so it's hard to torque with any real precision. In my book it falls into the "snug but not crazy tight" category. Just as tight as needed to not leak, which doesn't take much.
