Halep was 100% focused. She deeply wanted to avenge her defeat to Maria at the US Open. When at the US Open she was playing afraid to lose. Shows what a difference it makes mentally how you approach a match. Also, Halep was now starting to pick up on Maria's patterns.

Nice to see Halep overcome a poor matchup and record. Formerly 0-7 and now 1-7! Unfortunately for Halep, she's often overwhelmed by big occasions and big hitters, resulting in many semis and finals, but not the titles. Hope she can bag a major or two before she's all done.
@Buddychigo
6 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of Halep's but she was truly UNSTOPPABLE today. Made the most of her game with consistent baseline counter-punching, great depth and great serving. And I think she was mentally okay because it wasn't a Grand Slam and the number one ranking wasn't on the line. Hopefully this win will make her mentally stronger when it matters. As for Sharapova, same old story since she came back: plays 2 or 3 matches, loses steam, loses. I expect more from a top player who was out after a long doping ban and who had all the time in the world to prepare (she wasn't out for injury like Stephens). She needs a deep run or a title soon because the longer she plays without reaching a final/winning a title, the less people will believe the new narrative that she, her PR team and her fans are trying to feed us with - that Meldonium was "just aspirin".

Buddychigo nah not buying into that narrative. If she was using meldonium for medicinal purposes how come she doesn’t look like she has heart problems now without it? I don’t think an athlete with heart problems is able to play at that level with or without medication. During her matches, you can actually see that she is forcing the competitiveness. The other thing is, since Sloane Stephens won the US Open the competitiveness in WTA tournaments has suddenly gone up. If she wins in Hong Kong tomorrow ( there are no top players to talk about anyway), in the main tournaments she will still struggle. And I actually hope she struggles until she admits she was using meldonium as a PED not as ‘aspirin’ lmao. She is not the only player who was using it as a PED, the difference with her is the other players stopped using it when they were told it’s now illegal, and she didn’t stop thinking she will get away with it and beat Serena. So I hope she struggles until she learns what honesty is about 🤸♀️🙊🐒

Halep's coach probably told Halep to take it to Sharapova. Halep does have some strong defense but she can be a bit too passive at times. In future match ups, Halep needs to continue putting on the pressure and not being afraid to hit winners.
@judyli6912

I agree with you. I feel that her passiveness at times is what causes her to lose those important matches and finals. When she's on fire though, she's really on fire and I loved the way she played here. I hope she continues playing aggressively like this and learn from past mistakes. Can't afford to play passive, especially for a player of her type. She needs to turn that defence into ATTACK.

shes kind of lacking in the 'keeping focused department', when its a grand slam shes always too harsh on herself and thinks too much the mistakes shes made and that always affects how she plays for the whole game, this being a game with nothing on the line she was just really focused and wanted to beat sharapova, thats haleps biggest weakness really, herself, that's the only thing that's holding her back.

Maria ALL her career is an error machine,she's a double faulted but she ALWAYS gets always with it because she's mentally competitive and gets into her opponents head. Her major and only strategy is hitting the ball hard and harder minus few dropshots that's why she makes those errors,it gets worse when her opponent shows confidence,retrieves most balls and keeps her moving. She committed nearly 65 errors 10DFs vs Sevastova and still won(fine that was 3 sets but still) that was ridiculous I knew if she played a player who cleaned her act she would lose. She still doesn't have enough variety to her game,hard hitting and good serves makes you get away with many things but you need variety vs a player who has nothing to lose and who is skilled. Halep always had what it takes to win but she lacked belief/zero confidence before Masha. When I heard her pre press I knew something changed in her head,this tome she was looking forward to playing her. WTA has evolved,even pushers now can throw in more winners. Maria will need to evolve her tennis or she'll have issues matching up, it's no longer everyone hitting hard but there's variety, there's a lot of spinning forcing errors keeping opponent uncomfortable and she's not getting younger she doesn't have the best physical conditioning to grind week after week.

Halep should keep Andrei as the main coach, even though she did not win the title she did really play aggressive and finish the points asap once she got the right ball whereas in Singapore again she resorted to playing catchup and not smart counter punching waiting for her opponent error, this sort of play will take her deep in GS.
